Lancashire Lookup Requests / Matthew Gibson - 1871/1881 Census
« on: Saturday 14 September 19 20:33 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information regarding the national census during the life of Matthew Gibson.

He was born in 1852, Wigan and married Emma Moore (b. 1852). They married in 1869, Wigan and to date I have found 5 children (although I expect there to be more!);

James b.1874
Thomas b.1875
Charles b.1879
Mary b.1879
William b.1887

Matthew died in 1887 so I suspect William was the last.

I'm looking for information on the 1871 and 1881 census, and any prior to that which may be of use if anyone can help me please?

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Dragon Road - Harrogate
« on: Friday 26 July 19 18:41 BST (UK)  »
I have been vising Harrogate recently for work purposes, and I noticed that there is a particular road called Dragon Road next to the Asda supermarket. There is also surrounding roads with similar names such as Dragon Avenue.

Out of curiosity, I wondered if anyone knew why the roads were named after mythical creatures?

Cork / Cork Newspapers
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
I had published a thread a couple of days ago regarding research for Roche family in Cork (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=808322.msg6677438#msg6677438). In the initial request for information I had mentioned about trying to search for a newspaper article relating to the death of James Roche.

He had died in a road traffic accident in Q3 1965 in Birmingham, England. His wife Mary (formerly O'Neill) is said to have placed a notice in the local papers of Cork where he was born.

It is my desire to still find these articles and am looking for help with this please?

I don't know what newspapers where around in 1965 in Cork, other than The Cork Examiner (now Irish Examiner).

Cork / Roche Family Reserach
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Roche family history for a friend.

Her grandfather James Roche, she believes was born in Cork but later moved to Birmingham, England where he married his Irish wife Mary O'Neill (or O'Neil) in Q3 1940. In Q3 1965 (aged 49) he was killed when hit by a bus whilst crossing a road in Birmingham.

She believes that when he died, her grandmother Mary placed a notice in both their local newspaper as well as one in Cork (I believe this would be The Cork Examiner or Irish Examiner), and I would like to find these articles if anyone can help please. I have online newspaper access but mine only goes up to 1950.

My friend also believes that James had a brother called 'Danny' (Daniel?) who later emigrated to Canada (via Liverpool), this is also something which I would like to find.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Thank you in advance

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Sheffield United Reserves
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am attempting to help the Sheffield United historian in research that he is undertaking to find out lost fixtures and results from the reserves.

The results he is looking for correspond to WWII during all of the seasons (1940/41, 1941/42, 1942/43, 1943/44 & 1944/45). Mostly the results, and possibly dates are missing from the games below;

1941/42 - vs Sheffield Wednesday (home), Manvers Main, Thurcroft Main (away), Denaby United
1942/43 - vs Barnsley (home), Thurcroft Main
1943/44 - vs Rotherham United (home), Frickley Colliery Athletic, Manvers Main, Thurcroft Main (away), South Kirby Colliery
1944/45 - Sheffield Wednesday (home), Frickley Colliery Athletic, Grimsthorpe Rovers

I assume that he has already contacted the relevant clubs and they have returned nothing themselves. I know that he has checked local newspapers (The Sheffield Telegraph, The Sheffield Star, the Rotherham Advertiser and the Barnsley Chronicle), and some match day programmes from around that time - but not all.

It is a tall task but I was hoping that someone may either have some first team programmes from that time, ideally towards the end of the season, which would list dates and results or have a different access to online newspapers. I understand that 'The Green Un' may be on the national newspaper archives website but I don't have access to that.

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer me please.

Paul

Lancashire / Marriage: John H Meadth to Sarah Owens
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 21:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for a marriage between John H Meadth (b. Ireland, 1851) and Sarah Owens (b. Ireland, 1852).

Sarah had been previously married before to Samuel Owens in 1872, Belfast. In 1874 they had their first child whom was born in Pendleton, Lancashire, and by the time their final child was born in 1885 they had 4 living children together. Samuel died but I don't know when (or how).

In 1881 census they are living at 16 Tindal Street (or Tyndal St) in Manchester but cannot find (at least) Sarah in 1891 census.

I next find Sarah in 1901 living and married to John H Meadth but cannot find their registration of marriage. I can only assume that they were married in the Manchester area. In 1894 Sarah had an illegitimate child and whilst 1901 census lists Robert as Meadth, we don't believe John was the father!

Lancashire / Manchester City FC
« on: Sunday 18 February 18 20:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am appealing to all Manchester City supporters as well as Football Historians out there.

I am researching my mother-in-law's family and she believes there is a family tale that a Samuel Painter was once a Director at Manchester City FC (Circa 1900 - 1920).

It may be a load of rubbish but i am hoping that either way someone could please confirm this?

Lancashire / Matthew Gibson
« on: Sunday 28 January 18 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information regarding a Matthew Gibson. I have tried to find him in the 1871 census but so far have had no luck and turn to you for help.

Matthew was born in 1852, Wigan - I do not know who his parents are. My search suggests he died in 1887. In 1869 he married Emma Moore in Wigan. Together they had 5 children; James Thomas (b1874), Thomas Matthew (1875-1876), Charles (1879), Mary (1879) and William (1887).

The 1881 census says he was a Coal Miner and other than any other children they may have had, my next focus in this research is to find out his parents and where they were in 1871 census.

Thank you in advance for your help.
