Gloucestershire / St Marks, Gloucester
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 21:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi

It was just a quick question really, if I can I go to the LDS family centre and look at fiche for certain parishes. However I do not seem to be able to find St Marks in their library and was wondering if anyone knew of any transcriptions on line or if in fact Gloucester Record Office sell fiche of that parish.

Thanks

Paula

Gloucestershire / What parish is High Orchard in?
« on: Friday 12 September 08 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have researched the Merrett line back to my gx3 grandfather and have tried to find my gx4 grandfather with information online but I have not been lucky so I sent for my gx3 grandfather's marriage certificate to get his father's name and occupation (Thomas Merrett - gardener) hoping it would help but have found there are two people with similar names and ages.

So then I thought I would look for the parish in the area which my gx3 grandfather, William Merrett (1833), was born according to the census, so that I could order the fiche/film from the local LDS family centre. The place is High Orchard, Gloucester but the only information I could find was that there used to be a train yard at High Orchard, still not much help. So I looked on the marriage certificate and this says he was married in the parish of St Marks, Gloucester (of course this could be the parish where his wife Sarah Hanman came from and not High Orchard area). Looking to obtain the fiche/film for this church  has proved difficult because this is a fairly new church in that it was built in 1847 and William was born in 1833. So I have become stuck again.

So I am hoping that there will be someone on the list who knows the area and knows what parish High Orchard comes under so that I can order the right fiche. If it helps on the marriage certificate it says that William's abode at time of marriage was Park Street, is this the High Orchard area? Or can someone identify which Thomas is possibly the right connection because they know the area?

Even if someone can help with making the connection Thomas I would still like to know what parish High Orchard comes under as I actually quite enjoy going to the family centre and looking through the fiche/film.

Thanks

Europe / German records? Warth - Baden Baden
« on: Sunday 07 September 08 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I was wondering if people could point in the right direction when it comes to looking for German records.

In my husband’s tree there is Rudolf/Rudolph Worth/Warth who was born in Germany in 1870 and came over here in the late 19th century and married  Sarah Amelia Tyler in 1899 St Giles London.

I cannot find him on the 1891 census but do know he was here before the birth of his and Sarah’s first child (I think it was their first child) who was Rudolph William born in January 1898 in Westminster.

I knew from a family member that his mother and father were Leo and Theresia, so on looking on the IGI  I have found a Rudolf Warth bapt 15 July 1870 and the parents are Leo Warth and Theresia Kuestner. So this confirmed the information I was given.

What I would like to know is how I go about finding out more about Leo and Theresia and their family? Where do I look for records? How much German will I need to know? (I cannot speak German but I do have a German dictionary to help me out)

I have read the useful tips on finding German ancestors and have tried a couple of the tips without much luck so I am hoping that someone may be able to come up with some other suggestions. Any help at all would be great.

Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Mintrim possible suicide
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have someone in the tree called Charles James Mintrim born in 1881 Southampton and dying in 1926 Southampton. The family story goes that he committed suicide after threatening to take his family with him. However on his death certificate it says cerebral hemorrhage and does not mention suicide, but looking further into this I have discovered that this sort of death can be caused by traumatic brain injury.

So what I was wondering is it possible that this will have been reported in the local newspaper of the time or was it a taboo subject. If so what was the local newspaper, was it the Southampton Echo or something different?

Can you view the newspapers at Southampton record Office or Southampton library or would I need to go to Hampshire Record Office. I shall be travelling that way in the next month so if I knew where to go to look at the newspapers at the time, either for a small report or an obituary it would be a great help.

Thanks

Canada / How to find Canadian Records
« on: Monday 19 May 08 14:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am after a bit of help. My grandfather was William Joseph Isaac Clattenburg he was born in 1929 in Colbalt Ontario, his parents were Isaac Archibald Clattenburg b. 1889 Pleasant harbour and his mother was Mary Gannon b.c. 1899 I think in North Timiskaming, her mother Peter Gannon and Lucy McLaren.

I have the Clattenburg tree going back further and would like to take the Gannon and Mclaren line back further but I do not know where to look to find this information. The rest of my relatives are embedded firmly in Sussex, Somerset and Gloucester UK so I have had no need to delve elsewhere.

I have tried a couple of times to look and found nothing so have carried on with different lines of my tree, but this time, whilst any information that anyone has or finds would be fantastic I would also like advice on where to look and websites to use.

Thanks for any help.

Gloucestershire / Greening of Tewkesbury
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 22:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am hoping that someone might be able to find the birth of my great grampy Thomas Henry Greening born c.1894. I have searched the indexes and have been unable to find his birth. According to my mother who used to live with her grandparents Thomas was born in Tewkesbury.

The closest I have come is finding a Tom (Q3 1895) born in Tewkesbury at a similar time but I know this is not him because I ordered the birth certificate and his father was Jesse and he died shortly after.

According to Thomas Henry's marriage certifcate his father was John Greening a farm labourer.

I have found him on the 1901 census as Tom with Chris as a brother, I think possibly the person that my mum used to call Aunt Chrissie is Chris and there has been a mistake in registering him as a boy, and father John. RG13/2467/53 page 54.

As I cannot find any more details on him other than his marriage certificate Nov 1915 Newport to Florence Merrett I thought I would buy the marriage certificate of Chris (Christina) Greening (Aug 1916) to see if there were any details that were the same. Chris' certificate says that John was her  father and a general labourer, which I felt did not really give much away, John being quite a frequent name. Then I noticed that Christina 's witnesses were Charles John Greening and Ada Margaret Greening and Thomas Henry's witnesses were C.J. Greening and A. M. Greening.

Any help in finding Thomas Henry's birth details would be great or even more information on the most probable parents John and Elizabeth Greening would be fantastic. This has puzzled me for ages I hired a researcher from Gloucestershire with no luck and have been in touch with Thomas' Gloucestershire regiment with not much luck. The only information that they could find on the Thomas Henry they had details of was one in Tuffley.

I am totally stuck.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1881 census look up
« on: Wednesday 12 December 07 23:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Would it be possible for someone to look up a family for me
In 1871
James Tyler,(stableman/coachman) Jane Tyler and Sarah A. Tyler were living at Rices Stable, Little Ebury Street, which I think must have been off Ebury Street, St George Hanover Square
RG10/112/82/13

In 1891
Mary Jane Tyler, Sarah A. Tyler and Isabella Tyler are living at 39 Rupert street, St James, Westminster, Mary is now a widower.
RG12/87/24/30

No matter how I look for them I cannot seem to find any of them in 1881. I am hoping that someone might have some ideas as in 1871 they have been transcribed as Syler and in 1891 Mary is Mary Jesse instead of Mary Jane, there maybe other alternatives that I have not thought of. Any help at all would be much appreciated.

I am sure they must be around somewhere it is just I cannot think of any alternatives to their names to look for them.
