Hi Peter

Welcome to Rootschat.

It's an interesting story - and unusual so you may not get a flood of quick replies.
Hopefully someone will be able to help though - it just may take a while

I have added Masonic Lodge to the title to flag up the subject to people.

A long time ago, but I'm afraid this is General Helmuth von Moltke (the elder) see https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/1200x/46/6e/44/466e44d7ad8e0608f24fdfd02fa6de4f.jpg for example.

I think T1 is right about it being General Helmuth von Moltke who died in Berlin on 24 April 1891.

Armed Forces Resources / British Army Numbers - letter prefix 1920 onwards

In 1920, the army introduced a new system of issuing numbers. Sometimes this
included letter prefixes. More info here:

Well spotted.... they said GCSE on the form and it was in my head... I most definitely meant the ancient O Levels.

I think for some jobs they do still insist you have maths and English (because it is on the job description) even if it was  30 or 40 years ago.
