Australia / Ernest WATSON- reason for name change?
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 03:12 GMT (UK)  »
This gentleman named Ernest WATSON marries my great grandma Hilda COOPER in 1927. Imagine my suprise when I look up the electoral roll and find out he is not Ernest WATSON at all but listed as George Joseph Nesbit WATSON, or just Joseph WATSON in the 1930 electoral roll. Can anyone think of why he would have gone from one name to the other?
No wonder I was having trouble finding Ernest WATSON, when he does not exist.
Can anyone find George Joseph Nesbit WATSON on the Victoria index? he was meant to have been born 1887 BEECHWORTH Parents George and Muriel Victoria.

Imagine my greater suprise when I find this gentleman dies in 1966 in GLOUCESTER but my great grandmother remarries again in 1940, pretending shes a spinster to William Hovey SPOONER.
Ive got the certificate proving she was married to Mr Watson before this marriage.
What do you guys think, do I have a reason to suspect bigamy?

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Kelk family disapearance
« on: Monday 05 October 09 03:40 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find the Kelk family. They appear on the 1841 but no further censuses. George KELK and Mary PEARSON married 1824 KILLAMARSH, DERBY.
On the 1841 census George is listed as being born in about 1801 Derbyshire but I have found no baptism for him in the area and Mary PEARSON about 1805 Derbyshire. I have found her baptism in 1805 BALBOROUGH DERBY. Their children are John born 1824, dosent appear on the census, Ann born 1828, George born 1831, Elizabeth born 1833, Mary born 1836, William born 1839, and Catherine born 1841. Can anyone find this family or members of in further censuses or give me a clue about where they may have gone.

Travelling People / LEE, DAVIS-KENT
« on: Thursday 17 September 09 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello there, I was just wondering if DAVIS and LEE were common gypsy names in the KENT area?
My John LEE, was transported aboard the BARWELL for stealing a bay mare with his partner in crime Charles COOPER.
I believe he was born in 1758 and christened on the 20th of November 1758, FRINDSBURY,KENT, TO Richard and Margaret.
His parents were also married in 1758, on the 29th May 1758 DRATFORD KENT.
I can however not find anymore children for Richard LEE and Margaret in KENT.
Can anyone offer any advice on how to trace this family?

Hello all, I am looking for the baptism of Bessie Annie BRYANT. She married Walter Edwin BRYANT in QUEENSLAND 1889.
I was wondering if some one could attempt to find a baptism of her for me? either she was born a BRYANT or was married to one of William BRYANTS relatives and took on the name BRYANT then.

Australia / Convict aliases?
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello there, I was just wondering if there was any rhyme or reason to convicts choosing the aliases they did?
My convict Charles COOPER alias was John CONNOR and I was just wondering whether this could be a clue surnames were chosen from relatives ie mothers maiden name or whether it was completely random?

England / Margaret VANE- family story fake?
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello there:)
Can anyone help me get to the bottom of this?

There is a family story that that the woman Thomas COOPER had his children too(can't say married to because no marriage found as yet), was a VANE. Child of Henry VANE and Lady Margaret LOWTHER to be exact.

Her name is Margaret and she is said to be born in the family histories in about the 1750s at BENARDS CASTLE, but I can find no record of a Margaret VANE born to parents Henry and Margaret and she is not mentioned on the peerage website.

She is said to have been wiped from the family histories due to running off with Thomas who was a mere coachman though I'm thinking at least one or two records would remain?

What I need to know is how to sort this out as fact or fiction?
Perhaps there is a small amount of truth in the tale?
It has been suggested Margaret was a servent for the VANES and thats how it got all confused.

Any idea on where servant records would be kept?

Any help would be appreciated in clearing this up:)
