Hi again Gen
How to find Enumeration district descriptions on Ancestry
1.   Go to an image page on Ancestry
2.   There is a string above the image like this…
3.   You are here: Search > Census > UK Census Collection > 1881 England Census > Northumberland > Horton > District 10
4.   Click on Horton
5.   Choose the district you were wanting…(Sometimes theses a list of lots but in Horton’s case just one)
6.   Click on ‘View description of enumeration district’
Voila!
PS. If anyone knows of other ways of getting to this let me know
By the way this has been fascinating stuff…I’ll have to take a trip down there to have a look at the site sometime!

Hi Gen
Just looked at6 the enniumerators description for 1881 and it reads so..

The whole of the township of Horton including the Forster Pit Houses and sinkers Row. High and low Horton including the Sextons House in churchyard. Milh***s farm. Mickle gatehouse, Blacksmiths Cottage, North Moor Farm and cottages, The astlet Arms inn and other houses in North Moor Edge and Albion Inn Shank House

Might have been that they were away from main part of village

Hi Paul and Dave,

I have a copy of the journal it's in. I obtained it as a backnumber from The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical studies. Its in Family History, Vol 11 Nos 77/78 or new series nos 53/58. I can send details if you want.

....Ive always assumed it meant light-as opposed to dark-alder trees!

Think I might have just come accross one of the rarest surnames in England..... Swall.

It is a derivative of Swale and although there are many in the census records most of them are mistranscribed Swales.
They were originally from Kaber in Westmorland and now are centred (if you can centre two!) around North Allerton.
There were 7 in the 2007 electoral register and I am told by a lady who had Swall as her maiden name that there are just 2 now.

Has anyone come across a rarer one?

Thanks for this...I had actually found Peter and Dinah with the kids in
1871,1861 and 1851 and Sarah in 1871 but hadn't found Christiana. If I had thought properly I would have realised that Christiana wasnt there as a sister so must have been a sister in law (ie married a Collison son) or an Aunt. I cant find a marriage of a Collison (or Collinson) to a Christ*n* so perhaps its an Aunt or Aunt in Law

Durham / Re: John Oliver of Unthank
« on: Tuesday 09 October 07 13:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Dont know if this is helpful but there is an Unthank a lot nearer Rothbury, about 1 mile east of a tiny village called Alnham.   There were no Olivers there in 1841 but it has its own church and there are some entries in the IGI for Olivers and Olephers.
By the way there are lots of Unthanks in the North and it means a farmstead occupied (once) by squatters.  Try to have a look at this link on the Northumberland national park site for some bits about Unthank.
