The Common Room / My Other Brick Wall - Part 2
« on: Thursday 06 September 18 14:13 BST (UK)  »
My previous thread on the Lambs brought some interesting finds.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=784662.msg6396147#msg6396147

I was watching the WDYTYA? Jonnie Peacock which discussed the Liverpool docks.  Fazakerley was also mentioned in that programme.

I had heard this name before, and on checking my tree, realised that it was the birthplace of J W Lamb's second daughter.

I have obtained her birth certificate - details as follows:

6 June, 1888 Fazakerley R.S.D.(Not sure what that means?)
Name:Martha Lamb
Father: John William Lamb, Mother Margaret, formerly Cropper.
John described as Blacksmith, address given as Fazakerley.

Martha's siblings were mainly born in Bickerstaffe, where her parents married (in 1884) and where they are recorded on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses.

So, what is the connection with Fazakerley? This is a new one on me.

Would appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks.

The Common Room / Heir Hunters.....Just Wondering?
« on: Tuesday 24 July 18 15:42 BST (UK)  »
Firstly, apologies if this comes up twice.  Something strange just happened with my computer!

Having watched a recent Heir Hunters programme, I realised that a stepson was not entitled to inherit the estate of his stepfather under the intestacy rules.

Just wondered what would happen in this scenario?

A man has two children by his first wife.

Each of these sons has a child, Joan and Andrew - making them cousins.

Grandfather (also Andrew) remarries after the death of his first wife, and they have a child, who in turn marries and has a son, John - making him a half cousin of the other two.

Do the full cousins have a stronger claim under intestacy, or are they considered equals.  For example, if Andrew died without making a will, would the other two, even though not being full cousins, have equal shares of any estate left by Andrew?

thanks

The Common Room / Thomas Charles TAYLER
« on: Saturday 12 May 18 10:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for Thomas Charles TAYLER born Bow, Middx, 18 Feb 1874.

I have found baptism (1874) and school entry record (1880), and census entries for 1881, 1891.

Then I begin to struggle!  There is a suggestion of US Social Security Application for a Thomas Charles Tayler, but I don't have that access.  Did he go  to US, in that case my UK records go cold, or is he wrongly transcribed as TAYLOR, which makes the search a bit bigger!

Thanks in anticipation.

The Common Room / Walter Solomon MARTEN
« on: Monday 19 February 18 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
Having difficulty in tracing this man beyond 1874, and would appreciate a bit of help, please.

What I have on him is as follows:

Birth: 1846 Brighton

Census: 1851, 1861, 1871

Marriage: 23 Dec 1874 in Reigate, to Bertha Jane Westwood

And that's it........

On the 1881 Bertha Jane is with her mother and four children 5 years and under - so he was around for a few years at least! She is on the 1891.  Both Reigate.

It is only when we get to 1901 that she is marked as a widow - but I can't find his death. So, where is he?

The Common Room / Tying myself in knots!
« on: Saturday 03 February 18 12:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am in the process of checking my family tree with the use of an Ancestry subscription which I bought for myself as a treat at the start of the year!

I have WILLIAM DYSON, born 1822, married Martha Sykes in 1845, Elland, Yorkshire.

Just come across his baptism on 4 September 1859.  Clicking on to the next page I find baptisms of three of his children on the same date.  The person recording these baptisms has been helpful in recording the birth dates as well - which means that William was 37 when he was baptised. Was this unusual? (And bearing in mind the marriage in 1845).

It has given me his parents' names, (William and Sarah) so now trying to find them on 1841 census.  Not having much success, so hope someone can put me in the right direction here.

Would appreciate some help - just to make sure I am interpreting the information correctly!

Thanks.

The Common Room / My other brick wall
« on: Thursday 28 December 17 10:35 GMT (UK)  »
In November I posted a message about a relative who appeared to have disappeared without trace.  There was such a positive response, leading to not only finding the relative, but also his family that I knew nothing of. I am most grateful to all those who had a hand in sorting them out for me.

I am now looking at my other brick wall, which has defeated me for a number of years. This involves two people - a father, JAMES LAMB and his son, JOHN (JOHN WILLIAM) LAMB.(1862? - 1939)  I will list what I have, and hope that someone can point me in the right direction.

Marriage: 31 December 1884 in Bickerstaffe, Lancashire
John William Lamb and Margaret Cropper (both aged 22 years)
The father of John Lamb is given as James Lamb, occupation Moulder.  There is no indication whether he is still alive at this date.

I have John Lamb on the 1881 census in Bickerstaffe, where he is an apprentice blacksmith.  Place of birth is given as Liverpool. I also have him on all following available censuses up to and including 1911. I have traced in detail the children of John and Margaret and subsequent generations.

John William Lamb - Death: July/Aug/Sep 1939 Age 77 (I have sent for a copy of the death certificate)

I would love to get back in time to John's parents - this is the brick wall, which may lead to finding the rest of the family.

I may have missed the obvious last time around, or it may be that the information was not available on the internet then.  (It was only looking at the 1939 that led me to suspect I had found my last missing relative, but sadly, John died in 1939 before the register was  compiled).

Any help on this one would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The Common Room / Have I found him?
« on: Wednesday 22 November 17 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Some time ago, I posted a message about John Sandilands - Link here -

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=332810.msg2127413#msg2127413

I have found  a John Sandilands on the 1939 Register living at 220 Arlington Road, St. Pancras, London.  The date of birth (27 Feb 1880) is correct, so I am assuming that this is the right one. The record stated he was married, but he is the only occupant of the address.

Trying to move it a little further, I started looking for death records, but the only one I could find has the age at death as 71.  (Unfortunately, the death is before the birth date was recorded on the death certificate/index)

I have received today a copy of the death certificate for this individual.

Under occupation there is an address of 38 Camden Road, St. Pancras, not the occupation, which might have been helpful.  Date of death is 15 September 1960.

The description of the informant is: " F A Leverson, causing the body to be buried. 163 York Way, N7."

Have I found him?  I can't be sure.  Would appreciate your ideas/help on this.  It is a family brick wall - that is, I don't think his brother and sisters ever knew what had happened to him.  Would just so love to solve the mystery.

The Common Room / 1939 Register
« on: Monday 25 September 17 09:57 BST (UK)  »
I am sure this has been asked before - so apologies!  Have decided that the 1939 Register might be the next logical step in my research (having exhausted the 1911 census information, and too impatient to wait for the availability of the 1921 census).

Am I right in saying the only way to access this fully is through Find My Past?

Also, does Find My Past have any information on India?  I have promised a very dear friend that I will look into her family history, which starts in India.

Thanks.
