Kent / Catholic baptisms from barracks at Hythe 1814
« on: Wednesday 02 February 22 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor James Murray who was discharged on 24 Jul 1814 at Hythe, Kent from the 11th Royal Regiment of Veterans. He was 53.

I believe his son, Philip, was born in February that year [James was a sergeant so would have been entitled to have his wife with him]. My question is - where would Philip have been baptised? The family were Roman Catholic. Was there a catholic church near any barracks in Hythe?

Thank for any help.

London and Middlesex / Henrietta Monton married Thomas Sutcliffe 1780
« on: Monday 30 August 21 19:47 BST (UK)  »
Henrietta MONTON married Thomas SUTCLIFFE 15 May 1780 in St Bride's Fleet Street after banns, both signed their names, witnesses Robt Ayrton junr & Wm Shepherd [who witnessed several marriages on the page]. They had, at least, the following children Sarah Arabella 1769 [baptised as Sutcliffe although this was before the marriage], Thomas 1780, Sarah Mary 1782 [my ancestor]

I can find no records online for Henrietta Monton or Thomas Sutcliffe - possibly born about 1750 - 1760. Can any one help? Thanks.

Last night there was an online lecture from National Archives in Dublin called
‘Malignant destiny? Recovering the lost collections of the Public Record Office of Ireland’.

I sent off for a ticket but unfortunately an emergency prevented me from watching it. I have emailed the Archives to ask if it will be available online at all but have had no reply. Just wondering if any rootschatter saw or recorded it. Might there be a transcript?

TIA Josey

Aberdeenshire / James Murray born ca 1805 61st & 87th Regiments
« on: Friday 16 July 21 10:37 BST (UK)  »
James Murray was born in Borrisokane, Co Tipperary. Born before 18 July 1805. Attested in 61st Regiment 1 Jul 1825 aged 19 yrs regimental number 467; served 21 yrs 66 days including 11 yrs 3 months in Ceylon. Promoted corporal on 29 Dec 1829 & sergeant on 11 Apr 1832. Earned 2 good conduct badges but deprived on them for gross neglect on duty & demoted May 1841. Transferred 1 Nov 1841 aged 35 yrs 3 months from 61st to 87th allegedly to 'serve with older brother' where he held regimental number 1502. Discharged to pension from 87th on 13 Oct 1846 aged 41 at Newport, stating an intention of living in Aberdeen, North Britain where he wished to receive his pension.

Have searched Scottish census but cannot conclusively find him in Aberdeen in 1851. Has anyone ideas as to where to go from here? He was an older brother of my GG grandfather Philip born 1814. Are there any descendants out there?

TIA, Josey

London and Middlesex / James Charles Nottingham b 1874 Lambeth
« on: Friday 14 May 21 16:46 BST (UK)  »
James Charles Nottingham was born  14 Mar 1874 @ 50 Regent Street Lambeth; father Charles Nottingham engine fitter mother Sarah Nottingham formerly Dunn. Registered by mother who made her mark. Seem straightforward? Heck no.

Charles Nottingham in 1871 RG10 Piece:665 Folio: 80 Page :   12@ 13 John Street
James Nottingham 54   Head
Elizabeth Nottingham 51   Wife
Charles Nottingham   18   Son
Edwin Nottingham 14   Son
Frances Nottingham 11   Daughter
Sarah Dun 20   Stepdaughter
Alice Dun 17   Stepdaughter
Elizabeth Dunn née Clegg was widowed in 1867 & remarried to James Nottingham. Her 2 daughters Alice & Sarah were living with them.

In 1872 Charles marries Alice Mary Dunn his step-sister, Sarah Dunn is a witness.
Marriages Dec 1872
Dunn    Alice Mary        Lambeth    1d   469
Nottingham    Charles        Lambeth    1d   469
and in 1874 they have Elizabeth Frances
Births Jun 1874
Nottingham    Elizabeth Frances    DUNN    Lambeth    1d   426    who is baptised 9 May St. Mary's Lambeth. James Charles, born same quarter to her husband and sister, is NOT baptised with her.  I can find no baptism or death for him, and no further records.

In 1875 Sarah marries James Tremelling as a spinster; she signs. There appears there never was a marriage for her to Charles so the registration for James Charles Nottingham was not exactly correct.
Marriages Dec 1875
DUNN    Sarah        Lambeth    1d   798
Tremelling    James Humphery        Lambeth    1d   798

Hmmm, so it appears Charles, after his marriage to Alice, conceived a child with her sister Sarah
who is my great grandmother at the same time as conceiving one with his wife.

Can anyone find any records for James Charles? Maybe he was adopted, he doesn't appear with Sarah at any date afterwards.

Thanks for any help.

CLEGG, JOHN    58
GRO Reference: 1859  J Quarter in DEWSBURY  Volume 09B  Page 322

I have an ancestor John Clegg grocer who died aged 58 on 28 Dec 1858. An inquest was held 29 Dec 1958, as his body was found in bed. It was reported in The Leeds Tomes on 1 Jan 1859. I obtained the death certificate. The informant was the Coroner a Thomas Taylor.

The death was registered on 26 Apr 1859. Why would such a delay in registration happen? Could it be as simple as the Coroner not informing the Register Office sooner?

Thanks for any ideas.

Ireland / Tithe Applotment books - minimum age of of occupier
« on: Friday 19 March 21 09:28 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies to those who may be tired of my search for the parents of Philip Murray born 1814 .......

I have searched the Tithe Applotment books at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004625725/004625725_00118.pdf
and found a Philip Murray in Killeen, Borrisokane, Co Tipperary [all good & ties in with confirmed information so far] but the date of the books is stated as 1825 when my ancestor Philip would have been 11 [this age is taken from army & death records]. Does this indicate that there was an older Philip in Killeen at the time? Or may the date of the books have actually been later or spanned a period rather than one specific year? 1814 Philip married in Borrisokane in 1831.

Thanks for any help.
