Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Very odd Common Ancestor / Thrulines match
« on: Sunday 15 January 23 13:44 GMT (UK)  »
I have a DNA match of 7cM with C. Ancestry tells me that C and I are half 5th cousins once removed, and that our common ancestor is my 4 x great grandfather Thomas Child. Looking at the relationship tree on Ancestry, it has my 3 x great grandmother (Esther Child) as the half sister of C's 4 x great grandfather (William Attfield).
Six Ancestry members trees are cited as source for Thomas Child being William Attfield's father. One is a private tree, but if I look at the other 5, none of them say that WA is TC's son.
They all say that WA is the son of Thomas Attfield and  Elizabeth Rampton.
So how has Ancestry invented this relationship?

Census and Resource Discussion / Scope of 1921 census
« on: Thursday 29 December 22 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
I was under the impression that the 1921 census on FindMyPast just covered England and Wales.
FindMyPast says on their website:
https://www.findmypast.co.uk/blog/family-records/1921-census

"Taken on June 19 1921 after being delayed by two months due to industrial unrest, the 1921 Census saw over 38,000 enumerators dispatched to every corner of England and Wales to capture the details of more than 38 million people. This included over 8.5 million households as well as all manner of public and private institutions ranging from prisons and military bases to public schools and workhouses."

It does mention military bases in the above, but my assumption was that they would only be the ones in England and Wales.
But to my surprise I found my great uncle in the army in India on the census. But no sign of his wife and son, who would be about 5 years old. So did the census strictly apply to the military personnel overseas and not their families who lived with them.?

I have another relative who was overseas in the army in 1911 and his wife is included with him. So it looks like families were include 10 years earlier.

Scotland / The mysterious Arthur Ernest Baker
« on: Sunday 04 December 22 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
Arthur Ernest Baker married Jessie Henderson at 38 St Mary Wynd, Stirling(private house) on 5th may 1893. He was aged 20 and a private in the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, abode Edinburgh Castle. His parents were William Baker, housepainter journeyman and Jane Baker nee Freston.
Jessie was age 19 and a jute mill worker, her address was the same as the marriage place. her father was William Henderson, coachmaker (deceased) and Mary Henderson nee Primrose/
Witnesses Adam Henderson and Mary Smith.

Their first son William Arthur Baker was born at 2 St Marys Wynd, Stirling on 28 July 1893. registered by father still giving his address as Edinburgh castle
a second son Arthur Edward Baker was born 27 November 1899 at 4 Upper Bridge street, Stirling. Father's name recorded as Arthur Edward Baker (like the son), otherwise details of her maiden surname and marriage date all match. Arthur is still a private in the A & S Highlanders. Birth registered by the mother.

In the 1901 census Jessie is a widow living at 4 Upper Bridge street, with William and Arthur and her widowed mother Mary Henderson.

I can't find a birth or death of Arthur Ernest Baker, or any census prior to his marriage, or a marriage of his parents.

I can't find Jessie and her sons in 1911, but in 1921 they are at 38 St Marys Wynd.

When the older son married in 1927 in York he gave his address as 38 St Marys Wynd and said his father was Arthur Ernest Baker (dec) plumber

Can anyone find any more about Arthur Ernest Baker? Did he really die between conception of younger son and 1901 census?  Was the second son (Arthur Edward ) really his? I'm wondering if he left Jessie but still kept in touch and became a plumber after leaving the army, otherwise why would William put that on his marriage record?

England / Looking for Alfred Garner
« on: Thursday 10 November 22 13:22 GMT (UK)  »
Alfred Garner painted a picture of Lyme hall in Cheshire, probably some time in the mid to late 19th century.

https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/a-view-of-lyme-hall-132594/search/venue:national-trust-lyme-park-5824/page/7

The hall has gone through many changes since it was built and the lake has changed shape and size. The last major changes were done by an architect named Wyatt from 1815 or so.
As the scene depicted in the painting is not too different from the one I took when I visited (minus deer !), I think the painting must have been made after 1815.
Can anyone find any information about the artist dob / dod birthplace / residence etc, please. I thought I had him living in St Pancras b Newbury Berks abt 1820, but although he was a painter on one census, he was a painter and paperhanger on the next. Another in Wisbech b abt 1834  changed from Ag lab to painter to mole catcher, so I don't think he was an artist either.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Children of Amos Carr and Jane Wood
« on: Friday 04 November 22 09:24 GMT (UK)  »
Amos Carr and Jane Wood married by banns on 4 Dec 1787 at Moor Monkton. Amos Carr was baptised in Hunsingore on 10 Feb 1759 s/o Richard Carr and Elizabeth.
I have baptisms of 3 children for the couple in Hunsingore, William 13 Mar 1793, Thomas 14 Jul 1794, Hannah 29 May 1796. I have no further information on Hannah, Thomas died before 1841 census, but William appears on 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses, his age on those and his age at death in Jan 1871 are consistent with baptism date, so I have no reason to believe that the 3 children where baptised when they were 5 or 6 years old. So I think there are missing children.
Today I looked for any children baptised between 1787 and 1807 with Amos as father in West Riding. I found a group baptised at Fewston which fit nicely in the gap with no overlap with my 3 in Hunsingore - Amos is father but frustratingly no mother listed.

(There is another group in Dewsbury / Hartsead cum Clifton but their mother is Mary and they overlap so can be discounted. They fit with another Amos marrying Mary Fowler in Dewsbury in 1790)

Fewston seems a long way from Hunsingore but it would account for the missing children. I cannot find a third Amos marrying in Fewston or nearby who could have fathered them.

The Fewston baptisms are John 10 Aug 1788, Mary 20 Nov 1799 1789 (born 8 Nov) and Elizabeth 7 Mar 1791 (born 6 Mar)

Can anyone find another Amos or more evidence this set of Fewston children belong to my Amos, please.

added: modified to correct Mary's baptism year

Berkshire / Who was Richard Willis?
« on: Thursday 03 November 22 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
Richard Willis married Eva Constance Coxhead in 1919 in Swindon district. On 1921 census, they are living in Swindon with 3 children. The oldest was born before their marriage and is registered as a Coxhead and may not be Richard's child. Richard says he was born in Faringdon Berks and age is given as 51 (b abt 1870).
In 1939 he is a widower, at the same address, two of the three children are still with him. He says his dob is 13 Dec 1866.
Can anyone find his birth registration and any sign of him on earlier censuses please.

I have eliminated the Richard Willis mmn Fisher, he married Jessie Bennett and died in 1938. Probate granted to Jessie, his widow.

Berkshire / Looking for baptism and marriage of Abraham Townsend
« on: Thursday 27 October 22 12:06 BST (UK)  »
Abraham Townsend appears on the 1841 census in Abingdon prison. His age is given as 45, his occupation is weaver and he is born in county. He seems to have been committed for assaulting his wife according to newspaper articles and was unable to provide £10 surety so was jailed for a short time.
In 1851 he is living in Otwell street Abingdon, listed as married, but wife not living with him (unsurprisingly), his age is 61 (b abt 1790), he is a carpet weaver, born in Abingdon, and is deaf. I cannot find him on 1861 census, but I believe he died in Abingdon in 1869, burial 31 Jan 1869, residence Ock Street age 79 - birth year again abt 1790.
Can anyone find his wife or parents please?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / The mysterious Hannah Carr
« on: Monday 24 October 22 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hannah Carr appears on the 1851 census in Leeds with her father, stepmother and stepbrother

John Carr 29 b  Tockwith
Caroline Carr 26 b Leeds
Hannah Carr 6 b Kirk Deighton
Charles Randerson 5 b Leeds

Piece: 2317, Folio: 230, Page: 6

John Carr widower married Caroline Randerson spinster in 1850.
I am almost certain that John's first wife was Grace Nettleton. whom he married in 1842.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=866953.new#new

A number of on line trees have Hannah's full name as Hannah Lucy Maud Carr, born 15 September 1844. She should be registered in Q3 1844 in Knaresborough district if that is correct.
But I can find no trace of her birth reg or baptism.
There are three births reg for  Carrs with mmn Nettleton in Knaresborough district

Thomas Q2 1843
William Q3 1844
Thomas Q3 1845
and deaths of two Thomas Carrs, both age 0 in Q3 1843 and Q4 1845

Grace Carr died in Hunslet (Leeds district) in 1848. I cannot find a death for William either in Knaresborough or Leeds district before 1851, but no sign of him on 1851 census, and the quarter his birth is registered is when Hannah should have been registered if the various trees have her correct dob.
Could Hannah have been registered as William and it was discovered later she was female?
Any ideas?
