Gaelic Language / McIllhuaish
« on: Friday 21 February 25 10:24 GMT (UK)  »
My apologies for writing in English, but I am hoping a Gaelic speaker can help me. I'm researching a family of mine with the name McIllhuaish (various spellings) that lived in the Loch Tay area. Could anyone explain what the name means? I've an idea about the first part, McIll, but no idea with the rest. Also I'd love to know how it would be pronounced.

I agree wholeheartedly - I can't bear to use it anymore unless absolutely necessary

Not on La Digue I imagine but certainly at the capital, Victoria on Mahé. A outing to the other islands quite likely from there.

It could be La Digue, but I wouldn't be sure

I agree in the main with horsleydown - there are seven letters in the name although I see the ending as 'lell' not 'tell'. The scribe's  t is much straighter and thicker. Also the preceding letter doesn't look like other y's in the text. I'm inclined to Reslell, but what that represents is another matter.

The Common Room / Re: Tracing My Grandfather through DNA can it be done?

Your best approach is to analyse the matches on Ancestry etc. which are not connected to known family. I was in a very similar situation with one of my grandfathers and, although I could see many matches that must have been related to him, they were mostly in the same position as me - either adopted or children of adoptees. Finally I looked very closely into surnames and abodes of my matches' ancestors and a picture finally emerged. Very luckily they were in a fairly isolated part of the UK with a limited range of names. By matching two separate cases I've now identified my great grandparents (my grandfather is one of their sons but I can't yet be sure which one) and thus can take the line further back. Best of luck.

Is it just me, or is there no 'log out' button?
