Grenfell Place was in Maidenhead. Bray was the parish at that time.

"Can anyone help, I'm trying to find more details on Donald and trying to find who his parents were. Unfortunately the census for 1931 was destroyed during WW2."

Fortunately the Scottish 1931 census is intact and will be made available at the appropriate date.

Parish boundaries were very often marked by boundary stones. These sometimes bore the date they were erected.

Roses were not intended to be issued to soldiers who had died. Isn't that the more likely explanation for the rose being issued in error?

This may be him:

He appears on the CWGC website with the same service number but has no known grave and so is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. No next of kin details are given.

There's an excellent book about defence construction in Scotland:

If Hitler Comes - Preparing for Invasion Scotland 1940. Gordon Barclay, Birlinn 2013

Very detailed indeed although little about civilian input. There are, however, full references given which might lead to further reading. Highly recommended.

Apologies for confusion. My misunderstanding. Seems the grandson was born in 1974. As regards the 1922 birth the family mention in London I note that there was one for John S Stringer in Romford RD that year. I’m trying to get more feedback from the family on this one.

CaroleW. Thanks for the Edith Waller remarriage and death details, also the 1963 birth which I've now located.

Mckha489. Thanks for the pointer re the mother’s cremation. I don’t think they knew anything about that. Would you mind giving me has birth details and year/source for the Harrow cremation, please?

Jonw65. Thanks. That seems to pin down the likely death locality nicely. Where can I access the news articles you mention, please? Might be better to access these myself than discuss the content openly in this forum?
