The Common Room / Wahey!! - Scotlandspeople refund
« on: Thursday 23 October 08 19:34 BST (UK)  »
I've just received an email from Scotlandspeople informing me that following an audit of transactions I've basically been short changed to the tune of 150 credits. As way of an apoplogy they're refunding me 300 credits valid for 6 months instead of  90 days  ;D ;D

Staffordshire / Re: Staffordshire Colliery Deaths

My Great Grandfathers younger brother, Frederick William Cotton (known as William) also died in the Talke o'the Hill explosion, Dec 1866.
He is buried Christ Church, Alsager (his home parish)
He was only 13 years old. Its so sad.
I know lots of people who are currently moaning about how hard times are at the moment, but I don't think they realise just how lucky they really are.

Lancashire / Re: West Derby Union Infirmary - help needed please
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the link Carole.
I think I was looking at that one when I got confused - I was only expecting one West Derby Union, not the whole area that it covered. I've re-read it (several times!) and it's looking a lot clearer now.

Ken, I'd thought it might be the Mill Road one, but I'm sure I read somewhere that it changed it's name to Mill Road in 1906, so would it still be called West Derby Union Infirmary in 1909? - mind you, I still say Canny Farm (rather than the rather grand Stockbridge Village!)

Thanks to you both

Lancashire / West Derby Union Infirmary - help needed please
« on: Tuesday 26 August 08 22:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I've just received my gg grandmothers death cert and I'm trying to get a better understanding of where she died and how she ended up there.
Her death cert states place of death as West Derby Union Infirmary, West Derby. 01 Jan 1909.
I've Googled the name to try and get a fix on the location of the place, but there appears to be several workhouse/infirmaries that fell under 'West Derby Union'.
How can I find out which one she died in?
Under occupation, it states 'formerly housekeeper of 49 Cambridge St, Wavertree' Her son is the informant and also gives this address as his residence.
Would this Wavertree address be a clue as to which West Derby Union Infirmary she ended up in?
Any help appreciated
Thanks

Cheshire / congleton/sandbach birth query
« on: Friday 25 July 08 19:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Whilst looking for a possible brother for my great grandfather I've come a likely candidate.
Frederick William Cotton born 1853.
However, the BMD index (on Ancestry) has him in Congleton. whilst the Cheshire BMD has him in Sandbach.
I know the areas are not too far apart but is it likely that it's the same Frederick William?
Thanks

Lanarkshire / Re: Begg family, Glasgow
« on: Sunday 06 July 08 21:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi LittleLondoner,
On SP you can only view certs upto a certain date.
So Barbara and Jane's birth certs and any possible marriage certs will have to be ordered. Although as you already know their birth dates and parents names you won't get much more information from them anyway.

Elaine gave you the marriage details of their parents James Begg and Margaret Montgomery. From this I've found the marriage details of James Begg's parents. David Begg and Jane Cowan.

David and Jane married 23 Jan 1880 in Glasgow. Davids parents were David Begg (farmer) and Janet Gunn.
Jane Cowan's parents were Alexander Cowan (dairyman) and Janet Keith.
Witnesses to the marriage were William Begg and Margaret Cowan.

David died 20 Nov 1908 aged 52, Glasgow.
Jane died 11 Feb 1895 aged 38, Glasgow.

I don't know how much use this will be to you. I'm not sure how far back you wish to go or if you are just looking for more recent relations??

Staffordshire / Nathaniel Beckwith
« on: Thursday 03 July 08 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I'm looking for further details on Nathaniel Beckwith (particularly his parents)
Here's what I have so far:

On his son William's marriage cert (1854) he gives his fathers details as:
Nathaniel Beckwith, deceased.

William's birth details (on IGI) show William Beckwith born 13 July 1828, christened 25 dec 1832 (along with 2 siblings) at St Thomas, Birmingham. Parents are Nathan Beckwith and Sarah.

Also on IGI, are the marriage details of Nathaniel Beckwith and Sarah Woodward, 18 July 1824 at St Matthew, Walsall, Staffs.

I have the family on the 1841 census - Living at Soho Street, Handsworth. Nathaniel and Sarah are both aged 30? (I'm presuming ages have been rounded down?) All are born in county.

On the 1851 census - Grove Lane, Handsworth - Sarah is a widow aged 46? born Wednesbury, Staffs. Her remaining children are all born Handsworth, Staffs.

I've been looking in both Staffordshire and Warwickshire, but so far no luck.

Any help or a nudge in the right direction would be great.
Thanks
Sueky
