Antrim / DARRAGH/HIGGNS AHOGILL c1850--70
« on: Friday 26 October 07 13:10 BST (UK)  »
MY great grand parents GILBERT HIGGNS & ANNIE (ANNA) DARRAGH were married 12/10/1861 at Ahogill First Presbyterian Church.
The record tells me that GILBERT was a soldier at that time and he was aged 23. His father was named  Hugh Higgns and he was a weaver.
ANNIE--was aged 22 and her father was  Patrick Darragh--a servant.

I would be gratfeul if anybody could tell me how to  find out which regiment Gilbert served in--also where i can trace the births  of both bride and groom--or anything pre 1861 please.about  their  parents.

I have the dobs of their children but not too sure about correct date of my grand mother's birth., She was Jane Higgins and there are 2 Janes--one--dob 10/04/1872 presumably she died but I have been unable to trace a record of this, Then a dob of  21/01/1877 for the 2nd Jane.--this is my grandmother On 2 census forms it gives her birth year  as c 1878 which would tie in with 1877 but  her brthday was 1st April not 21st January..
Any help/advice/pointers in the right direction would be welcomed
Thank you--Eileen.

oops! must have made a mistake on this one then! However--she was definitely my Samuel's mother --think maybe I meant to put 1760

I haven't checked the IGI for a while --when I did there was only one child born to Hector Munro & Barbara Ross-and I could  only find one on Scotland's people--unless they too have recently updated their records

Thank you for this IGI info JJ--will head there this evening.

Dear Judith--thank you for this---a lovely surprise to get the email telling me to check the board As you say there is very likely to be  a connection somewhere--especially as your men & mine were in similar occupations-in one case exactly the same and in the same area.

Somebody is going to have a look at records for me & at graves in the Dingwall area so if anything crops up that links us at all--I will get in touch.
I plan to look at my direct Munro line siblings soon so who knows?
"Watch this space"!!--regards--Eileen

Hi Lynn,
Thank you for your message--my eyes must be better than I think!! :)
I appreciate you telling me this--and will see what I can find on  google about it--also if there is an old map there.

I got --last week-- the testament of his son Samuel also a mason and it includes some of the places where he worked and money owing at his death--must see if Tullich is mentioned on there--It's long and a bit faint so I  haven't really looked closely as yet

It certainly does help--thank you.I feel quite excited--another discovery!

Thank you for this suggestion Ann--I would never have thought of writing to the  submitter-I'll see if a name etc is there.

I should have thought about the use of maiden name on remarriage as I know in Scotland you don't "lose" it. Also, my husband's grandma re married in her maiden name-once I found out that a couple of other mysteries were solved. That was in England

I have also (this afternoon) put Barbara Ross in a new thread

I appreciate yuor support--thank you
Eileen

I am trying to track down a BARBARA ROSS. She married  HECTOR MUNRO and they had a son SAMUEL MUNRO born28/11/1778 at kilmuir Easter Ross & Cromarty.Info from Scotland's people. I can find no record of her birth or place of birth.I am guessing at her DoB from Samuel's age.

I have been unable to trace a marriage certificate for Hector & Barbara. --or of his birth either .

I am also unable to "translate" Hector's occupation on the birth record of his son but it looked like  mason in Tullich. --does anyone know if the latter is a place name? His son & a grandson were masons.
Any suggestions will be very welcome--thank you

Hi Joe--all tuppence worths very welcome!!

I have found a family recored group with Barbara Mc F on but it is a submitted record--I'll re check that.
My leaning is toroids Ross for various reasons
I haven't found a Barbara Munro on the 1841 census--if dates are roughly correct she would be around75 which could fit in with 70.!
I'll look this up --if the same one the Barbara would be about 48

Thank you for your in put-I appreciate it

Hi Ann--thank you for your message--also for checking S people records for me. I appreciate your helpful support.

My grandfather (he died when I was in my 30s)  used to say that Ross was a family name and that his grandmother was a Ross-that, of course, would be his great grandma-- if Barbara Ross was meant--but---!!

The records in IGI were submitted which made me wary so I wondered if some body had found my Samuel with Hector for a father and added him in with the others!

In IGI records there is also one with just Samuel--correct dates & Barbara Ross & Hector Munro as parents--a few with Mac Farquhar--must check what kind of record that is!

There were a lot of Hector Munros around at the time!

I know that I have my correct ancestors back as far as Samuel because of first hand knowledge & birth & marriage certs. I also know that I have the correct wife for Samuel--death certs and her maiden name being used down the family..( though I take your point re it could be a friend or relative's name  etc)

However--I will keep searching with an open--if somewhat confused!--mind!

Thank you--Eileen
