Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Wimborne Minster lookup please 1815

I wonder if you have considered this marriage when John would have been aged about 27.
There was a marriage of a John Lambert to a Hannah Chappel at Wimborne 13th October 1788 by banns. Both o.t.p. and both made their marks. Witnesses Ann Lambert and William possibly Thorn but the writing in the register is very smudged.

Hi Tazzie

Hopefully obtaining John’s certificate will prove worthwhile. As Wimborne Cemetery didn’t open until 1856 he was probably buried in the grounds of the Minster Church and as over the years the majority of the churchyard has been revamped I’m afraid there is little chance of identifying his grave.
I notice that FreeBMD has Christiana as Winbourne Vol: 5a  Page: 230 but if you look at the scan you will find another variation of the spelling where it appears to be Christenia and Wimbourne. For the death to have been registered in this district and assuming we have the correct entry in 1851 presumably she moved back from Ringwood before she died, maybe to live with another of her children or was she just visiting in 1851? Possibly the informant on her certificate (more expense) would give a clue.

Hi again Tazzie

There was a John Lambert buried at Wimborne Minster 20th February 1839 aged 77, born about 1762.
A Christiana Lambert was also buried at Wimborne Minster 20th February 1858 aged 87, born about 1771.
This is possibly the Christian Lambert shown as the widowed mother aged 79 (born Dorset Watcomb) of Robert Lambert aged 40 (born Dorset Wimborne). The family are at Crow, Ringwood. HO107. Piece: 1667. Folio: 411. Page: 9.
This Robert Lambert is likely to be the son of John and Christian baptised at Tarrant Rushton 11th November 1810. The village of Tarrant Rushton as you probably know is about 6 miles from Wimborne.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Jersey Marriage John Bickle Metters & Isabella Case.
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with this marriage please?

I have the birth of Jane Ellen Metters 10th December 1867 with baptism 29th January 1868 St Helier, Jersey. Father: John Bickle Metters. Mariner. Mother: Isabella Case. What I believe to be the same Isabella Case was a godmother to Jane Elvina Du Feu 14th May 1865 therefore I suspect the marriage took place between these dates. In 1871 through to 1901 Isabella Metters was shown as a widow.

What I would like to find out is the names and occupations of the couple’s fathers although I would be grateful for any other information regarding this family.

The IGI shows Christenings taking place at The British Chapel at least as early as 1823 which appears to be some 20 years before the building of the main French railway system so it seems unlikely that it would have been built for workers on the project.

Dorset / Re: James of Wimborne, Dorset

Whilst at Dorset Records Office last week researching some marriages I was looking at the St John’s Church registers and noticed a James marriage adjacent to one that I was searching for. Sorry I didn’t make a note of the details and as I was looking at several years I can’t remember which one it was - so not much help to you I’m afraid.

At the DRO the St John’s BMDs appear to be on one microfilm indexed as New Borough and Leigh and as far as I can see there are currently no transcriptions for the parish on the OPC site or Ancestry although the latter does have some banns recorded. As I was told by a member of staff that Ancestry has copied all of the films, possibly they will be adding them at a later date.

Sorry about getting my Uppers and Lowers mixed up :-[ Of course the Upper gardens are beyond the old Mont Dore Hotel (Town Hall) towards Coy Pond. Now that I can see the third X I'll stick my neck out and suggest that it's above the shop on the corner of Westover Road and Gervis Place. I think by the early 50s and possibly earlier this was Daniel Reed's (can't remember if that's the right spelling) or am I getting my Daniels mixed up - there was another one further along Westover Road near the Palace Court. It was certainly a branch of a rather upmarket outfitters and I'm pretty sure I remember them having a mixture of tweeds and evening dress wear in their windows. Being a little bit older I do remember walking along the sea front towards the end of WW2 and seeing the coils of barbed wire strung out along beach.
