The Common Room / Re: question about laminating old documents?

many thanks for all your advice. I will photocopy the certificate and then store original in acid free box as suggested.

The Common Room / question about laminating old documents?
« on: Saturday 24 April 21 09:40 BST (UK)  »
I have just received some old documents from my uncles estate. They include his baptism certificate (1920) which is in really poor condition. Every time you touch it another piece falls off.

I tried to feed it into an acid free document but more came off - it is not very strong and already in about 10 pieces.

I think the only hope of preservation is to laminate it.  I would do that straight away but just wondered if there was an obvious reason why one shouldn't.

So to laminate or not, that is the question?

Australia / Re: John and Sarah French emigrated to Australia

thank you Rosie for those details, where are you finding them?

Australia / John and Sarah French emigrated to Australia

I know John and Sarah (nee Mingay) emigrated sometime between 1871 and 1881 census to Australia but do not know on when. They should have had two children with them: Caroline Elizabeth (b1866) and Daniel (b1868)

I believe John died 1883 and Sarah remarried but cannot find where I got this information from. recommend if you move house, don't let anyone else pack up your family record folders as they seem to be half missing!

The Common Room / Re: Were baptisms always in a church/chapel?

I have a marriage on my tree  Christmas Day 1869 between Alfred Gowlett and Mary Ann Ellen Moss both aged 19 years who got married in the schoolroom in Radwinter Essex.
In the marriage register, they seem to be unusual as all other marriages are marked as 'at church' or 'at the Parish Church'

It looks like it was changed on the certificate with 'church' being overwritten by (possibly) 'licensed'.

I wonder why the church was not used?

Suffolk / Re: Ipswich Probate for Kent?
« on: Friday 29 January 21 12:15 GMT (UK)  »
When I applied for probate from my father, I used the local office to me - Ipswich but the probate office sent it up to Newcastle as Ipswich was running slow.
So his probate is Newcastle which will surprise people in years to come

Could the same have happened with yours?

Many thanks,
think I will stick with what I have got now and save the money - (unless Santa gives it to me in my stocking!!)

I am wondering whether to upgrade my family treemaker 2014.1 to the (what I think is the newest) 2019 version.

How has anyone got on with it?
Does it give you enough new features? - (I am not linked to Ancestry)
is it worth the extra money?
I see I could get it for a 'mere' 50 as I am already a registered user of 2014.

All comments would be gratefully received.

I tried making a new account but that also got rejected on password and user name not matching. All very annoying
