The Common Room / Re: Can anyone trace Adelaide?
« on: Thursday 06 November 14 20:46 GMT (UK)  »
1891 Census : 90 Grove Street, St George's East
William J. Springett   Age : 39   Dock Labourer    Born : Maryleborne
Margaret  Springett   Age : 29   Born : St Luke's East
William J. Springett   Age : 6     Born : St George  (he can be found as William John b. c Mar1885)
Susan E. Springett    Age : 3     Born : Mile End ( she Susannah Eliza b. c Mar1888)

This seems to be the right family.

William J. - possibly being "William John" - I haven't found him born Maryleborne (c1842)

Margaret possibly appearing as Mary in the 1901 Census at the Salvation Army with Adelaide.

Susan E. possibly being "Susan Eliza" who died not very long after the census in 1891.

Two last thoughts.

There is a marriage September 1884 - Mile End Old Town.
William John Springett and Margaret Haley.

There is a Margaret Springett, age 47 died Whitechapel December 1907.  The age and name
combination - might be right.  If her maiden name was Haley - I can't find the birth in St Luke's.

Maybe someone with a bit better understanding of the Parish's might see her ?

So curious what became of this little girl Adelaide.

Thanks again,

I'll order the certificate.  I think that will be the only way to determine if this is
the right Bridget Tobin. As I mentioned already both parents died by the time
she was 8.  She had no living siblings that I am aware of.  She did have Aunts
and Uncles on her fathers side.  Checking their records I can find no clue or mention
of Bridget.  Only her grandmother took her in until she could no longer care for her.

Hope it turns out to be her  :)

Thank you again,

Key is to determine if she married John Hearn to know if this is my
girl.

Thank you again  :)

I'll see if I can get the Marriage Certificate.

Not sure what you mean about the workhouse being used as a hospital ?

Thank you,

Yes I have and do have John Hearn and Bridget in the 1911 Census.  Just no
proof that she is the young lady in question.  No luck with Francis Schubert.

Wondering how many girls in a similar situation found themselves in the workhouse
and if there would have been a reasonable chance that they may have gotten out.

Hoping this name might be familiar to someone out there.

Bridget TOBIN was the daughter of Bartholomew TOBIN and Sarah ALLEN.
She was born 14 Feb 1879 in Poplar.  By the time she was age 8 both parents
had died and for some time she was taken in by her paternal grandmother. By
1891 she was given up by her grandmother and is in St Mary's Orphanage,
"Poor Law" School for Catholic Girls.  September 1898 she enters the Stepney
Workhouse with her 10 month old illegitimate daughter.

I loose track of Bridget at this point.  I believe that her baby daughter died within
a year of the entry date into the Workhouse.

Is any familiar enough with Workhouses to say that it is probable that she lived
her days out there or would it not have been uncommon to eventually leave the
workhouse ?

Any advice, guidance, opinions greatly appreciated.
