Northumberland Lookup Requests / St Andrew 1652 marriage
« on: Friday 17 August 12 10:00 BST (UK)  »
Sorry folks I know this might be a hard one but both Genuki and Familysearch have George Hymers marrying George  (?) Kiching on 22nd July 1652 and I wondered if this could be right?
Does anyone have access to such early records please?
many thanks Sylvia

Northumberland / In a bit of a pickle with all the Matthews in Corbridge
« on: Monday 07 May 12 21:40 BST (UK)  »
I was happily going along with all the Matthew Cutters in my family until yesterday.
The definate one I have is Matthew Cutter in Corbridge baptised 1692, father Matthew, and married to Susannah Nixon in 1718. There is a probate record which I thought must be him dated 1759 giving his occupation as Blacksmith.
Now here's where it gets tricky...the only baptism for my Matthew on Family Search and the Corbridge Registers is a baptism in 1670 with yet another Matthew as father.
Yesterday I came across an interesting document on Documentsonline stating....
"Short title: Cutter v Cutter.
Document type: Bill only.
Plaintiffs: Matthew Cutter, blacksmith, Joseph Cutter, yeoman, Charles Cutter, tailor and Thomas Cutter, yeoman all of Corbridge, Northumberland (only surviving brothers of Samuel Cutter, yeoman deceased late of Newark upon Trent, Nottinghamshire), Anthony Hobson, yeoman of Whale Lowther, Westmorland and Jane Hobson his wife (said Jane Hobson is the only child of John Cutter, yeoman deceased late of Aydon, White House, Corbridge who was another brother of said Samuel Cutter).
Defendants: Ann Cutter.
Date of bill (or first document): 1750. "
Checking all the names gives all the sons except Matthew a father called Charles.
Am I missing something here? My Matthew (1692?-1759) named his eldest son Charles
Hope you can understand all this, it's a bit mind muddling

Lincolnshire / Wainfleet marriages
« on: Friday 27 April 12 22:29 BST (UK)  »
I was checking a Familysearch marriage on Lincs to the past at Wainfleet St Mary

James Hynman
bride's name: Grace Whiteing
marriage date: 03 Jun 1686
marriage place: Wainfleet All Saints,Lincoln
indexing project (batch) number:M03370-2

The image on Lincs says there were no marriages at all in 1686  ??? In fact there are very few marriages there. It seems a bit odd. Is it possible Banns were read there and the marriage took place somewhere else? If so any suggestions please as to where?
I'm trying to find out if Grace Whiting was a widow at the above marriage.
Sylvia

Ooops I think I was looking at Wainfleet St Mary, not All Saints

Lincolnshire / So mad in Wrangle!!
« on: Saturday 24 March 12 00:42 GMT (UK)  »
I could throw a tantrum >:(
I have a James Hinman (Hynman) married to Grace Whiting in Wainfleet All Saints 1686. Their daughter (my) Prudence was born in 1687 in Wrangle.
OK so far so good.Looking for a father for James I clicked on ancestry (as you do) and came up with 4 trees all giving his b/date as 1667 in Wrangle with father Francis and mother Ann. This looks hopeful, so flicking backwards and forwards between familysearch, freereg and lincs to the past I got a nice little tree going for Francis including his 3 wives, the last of which was named Prudence Nice one I thought, James has named his daughter afterward Francis last wife.

OK you guessed it another scroll through familysearch has discovered the James Hinman I have been chasing actually died aged 4!!!!!
Pleeeez can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm hoping Francis and Ann had another son they named James, but that's too much to hope for I suppose

Occupation Interests / From school to cook domestic
« on: Friday 02 March 12 07:28 GMT (UK)  »
I've just found my g/gran attending Laxton St School, Southwark and a leaving date of 1889 is given (thank you Ancestry  :) ) She would have been aged 9 and this is 3 weeks before her father died of heart failure at the London Hospital.
My question is would she have actually left school at that age? She is listed as aged 21 on the 1901 census as a cook, domestic at a house in Fairfax Rd, Chiswick. Seems awfully young to be a cook in a large house? especially with such a lack of formal education  ???

Lincolnshire / LCC wills
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 19:34 GMT (UK)  »
Someone has very kindly put a PDF index of LCC wills 1701-50 online. Sadly only F-G but there are a couple of Goodricks I'd be interested in.
Any suggestions please as to the easiest (and cheapest) way to get copies bearing in mind that I am in New Zealand  :-\
Also is there any way to get the whole index or other years, or even search a name?
 many thanks Sylvia

Cumberland / Richard Graves-Mary Wren, Crosthwaite
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Ok this will be a long shot sorry  :-\

I have a 5x g/grandfather Richard Greaves who, according to records "came to work in Newcastle about 1730." He was a watchmaker
Various children were baptised from 1731 at All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne, mother noted as Mary.
I have torn my hair out trying to find a Richard marrying a Mary in or around Newcastle with no luck. So I thought I'd widen my choices with Familysearch.

The likeliest candidate is Richard Graves marrying Mary Wren in Crosthwaite in 1725 and I wonder if the Parish Records would give the Groom's occupation.
Can anyone help please??

PS. A very distant cousin of my Richard married the son of the Vicar of Crosthwaite 100 years later.....connection??? :-)
PPS A re-connection to Cumberland would feel very weird, I spent 10 years of my childhood there, in Seascale
many thanks, Sylvia

Lincolnshire / Am I on the right track please?
« on: Friday 30 December 11 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have William Foster marrying Tabitha Hutton in Frampton 1757. They were both from Alford but I believe I have the right couple as the PR states to the effect...
Bride formerly of Alford (each of them past the full age of twenty one years were married in this church by licence this seventeenth day of August 1757 by desire of Mr Myres by me John Calthrop Vicar of Boston
What does the last bit mean though about "by desire of Mr Myres"??? Tabitha was rather pregnant at the time would that explain it?

I have also looked for a Tabitha Hutton's baptism and the only one that jumps up is
this one on the IGI
TABITHA HUTTON
Christening:  27 DEC 1734   Partney, Lincoln,
Parents:
  Father:  JOHN HUTTON
  Mother:  FRANCES
(My note- Frances Goodrick??)

Any thoughts anyone please. I have tried to verify bmd's for this family on lincstothepast but the Parish Clerks weren't very forthcoming with info generally.
thanks Sylvia
