The Common Room / Re: I can't believe anyone would do this
« on: Saturday 19 February 05 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have searched my mum's papers and albums for a pic of my dad after a footbal game when he was about 12-13...it must have been thrown out during one of her many moves :-[ Prbably along with many others...I know there was an album of photos of his navy days on the China Station, I loved to look at the pictures of the funny Chinese ships when I was a child.
Now!!! will someone really be interested, in years to come, of the car rallies we went on  :)

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Richards/Smith marriage
« on: Sunday 13 February 05 21:14 GMT (UK)  »
I think I've found the 1st hubby of my g/grandmother in Hull...not quite sure how I can prove it though...she was a Smith!!!

Not even sure if she ever did marry John Garfield in Bethnal Green (second marriage?)...oh what tangled webs we weave!!
Eliza Smith, born Hull, with John Garfield as a Visitor on the 1871 census, Bethnal Green..... Daughter Eliza Lydia Garfield's birth cert 1880 gives mother as Eliza Garfield late Richards formerly Smith, Hull district, Yorkshire

I know she left children up in Hull, (verified by my aunt but no names known), and William Richards is on the 1871 as a widow, but I'm pretty sure I'm right that Eliza left him.

Marriage for William Richards and Eliza Smith, Holy Trinity, Hull 1859

William Richards and Eliza on the 1861 + 1 child
William Richards on the 1871, 2 children (looks like 1 died) no Eliza, says widower

William Richards on the1881, 1891 but not 1901 Can't see a death for Eliza!!!!

What do you think? Any suggestions how to prove all this? one of those "banging head on a brickwall times" Sylvia

« on: Thursday 27 January 05 08:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Ed,

Please, please do you have any Newtons on your 1841 Westoe census.
Also does that come under Jarrow as a parish or just generally South Shields?
Sorry I'm in New Zealand and the parishes have me totally confused

Many thanks

Gloucestershire Completed Lookup Requests / Swan Inn, Chipping Campden
« on: Wednesday 29 December 04 09:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks
I found this little nugget of info (it's the GARFIELD name that interests me) and now have lost the website it came from...aaargh!
Can anyone help with history on this Inn...does it still exist?
Do any pictures of it exist?
How far from Warwickshire, and in particular Stratford on Avon, is Chipping Campden?

Chipping Campden.
The Swan Inn - Formerly known as the fox. The major portion was leased by John Keyte of Broadway and others to Thomas Garfield in 1671 for 2000 years at 10s rent. His son John Garfield sold the lease to Lewis Harrison in 1709. In 1780 the lease belonged to Thomas Russell, whose executors sold to Richard Hands, whose widdow Anne Clarke held it after his death in 1793 until 1830, when the children sold it to Mrs. Palmer. Mr. Drury owned later.

Any help would really be appreciated, Sylvia

Technical Help / Re: Question regarding events on Gen. Programs
« on: Monday 20 December 04 08:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Shanko
The Mormans have a sealing of the dead ceremony and I assume the sealing for a child is similar ...a kind of baptism I think.
No doubt someone can correct me if I'm wrong

Don't know how far back the Wills and Deeds go but if you could have a look for GARFIELD in Coventry, Stratford on Avon or Preston on Stour 1700-1800's, I would be eternally gratefully
