Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / RAF Bomber Crew 1945
« on: Saturday 30 May 09 08:16 BST (UK)  »
The attached photograph show the crew of an RAF Lancaster bomber taken in 1945. My uncle was flying with this crew until a few days before the photograph was taken, when he was killed by flak over Germany.

It would be fantastic if this precious photograph could be tidied up and coloured in honour of these brave men. I have made a few attempts myself but the results have been awful, so I was wondering if the very talented people here could perhaps have a go  :D

In terms of the colours, I would have thought that the life jackets would have been yellow; the Lancaster was mostly black with brown camouflage at the top, but I am sure that there are some real experts out there who could advise...

Thanking you all in anticipation - John

Armed Forces / Militia in Devon around 1810
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 07:50 BST (UK)  »
My gr-gr-gr-grandfather Joseph Reffell was born in Shere Surrey in 1876. He married Elizabeth Hatch on 4 April 1810 at the church of St Mary Totnes.

I am trying to find out why, at a time that pre-dates railways in Devon, someone who was born in Surrey, would travel to Totnes to get married, and then bring his new wife to London to live out the rest of their lives as publicans.

My latest theory is that he was possibly in the militia which I have been told was quite widespread in the area at the time.

However I have no idea as to how i could find out whether this was indeed the case, and would appreciate any pointers & hints as to which specific resources there are for this time and area. My Internet searching has not found anything so far...

Thanks very much in anticipation - John

Lanarkshire / Glasgow Western Necropolis - WW2 RAF Death
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 07:31 BST (UK)  »
It would be greatly appreciated if some kind person is able to get to the Glasgow Western Necropolis and take a photograph of the gravestone of an RAF airman who was killed in an aircraft crash that I am researching.

The crash took place close to RAF Chivenor in North Devon and the man was taken back to Glasgow where he came from to be buried.

These are the details from the CWGC:-

HEAVISIDES, WILLIAM LEONARD     Flight Sergeant   802520   06/02/1942    23   Royal Air Force (Auxiliary Air Force)   United Kingdom   Sec. R. Grave 1275.   GLASGOW WESTERN NECROPOLIS

Thank you very much - John

London and Middlesex / Can you make sense of this please?
« on: Thursday 07 May 09 08:50 BST (UK)  »
Attached is a copy of a Pallot Marriage entry for Maria Burchatt & Ovid Topham at St Marylebone in 1811.

I would like some help deciphering what the wording under the names is, I believe that it may possibly relate to Ovid being a widow?

Thank you all very much - John

Unwanted Certificates & Artefacts / Old Photographs - Sussex
« on: Wednesday 22 April 09 07:51 BST (UK)  »
Many years ago I bought a box of photographs from a 'junk shop' in Burgess Hill in West Sussex.

I have now scanned them onto my website and I would be very pleased to pass any original onto descendants etc..

Some of the photographs have details on the back and among these the Sellwood name features, as does the family at West Worthing railway station.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Confused by DNA testing
« on: Sunday 12 April 09 07:37 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience...

Eighteen months ago I had a Y-DNA test in order to find out more about my deep past, not really expecting any connections to be made to any living person.

Surprisingly, two close connection (within 3 generations) have been made by ancestry, which is good news.

The bad news is that both of those are linked by by the same surname and seem to have been in the USA for several generations. It certainly looks like I am in the minority here.

However, I am reasonably confident of my paternal line here in the UK and can see no possible connection. Not withstanding some personal issue in the family (always possible of course, but seems very unlikely), I am wondering if it is possible that these companies can make a mistake either in the testing or something else???

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / FTM2009 Preferences
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 07:00 BST (UK)  »
I have used Legacy for many years now, but I am now trying FTM2009 as a replacement. Whilst i am generally happy with it, I am at a loss as to how to change some basic preferences.

I have looked around the FTM and others websites and many have formed the possibly incorrect view that there should be a menu for preferences under 'File', but I have no such option. All I have found is some limited changes that can be made under 'Tools/Options'.

Specifically I would like to be able to change the following information:-

1) Display a User Reference Number or RIN

2) Display whether people are alive or not

3) The ability to change the display colours

4) The location of media

The problem with the last item is that my imported data from Legacy refers to a location on my hard drive that needs to be changed globally.

Many thanks in advance  :)

John
