Canada Lookup Request / Passenger to Canada lookup please..
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 07:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if some kind person could please look up the emigration of my grand uncle (George) Edward Reffell to Canada.

He is last listed in London in 1919 and emigrated to Canada where he married Dorothy Vernon McMartin in Winnipeg in 1925.

I have put what I know about the man on  my website at http://www.reffell.org.uk/people/rfcpilotbusinessman.php

All information gratefully received!

Many thanks in advance - John

England / Don't take an eraser into the National Archives!
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 09:10 GMT (UK)  »
As most people here will know, the National Archives at Kew have a policy of not allowing erasers into the Reading Room.

In a visit earlier this week, I found that they have adopted a tougher attitude on enforcing this, to the extent that pencils that have erasers in the tip are now not allowed in either.

Security staff will pull the eraser out of any such pencil and throw it into the bin.

World War Two / P/O Anthony Hugh Denison REFFELL died 6/2/1942
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 09:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking for some time for information about P/O Anthony Hugh Denison REFFELL. It seems to be very difficult to find out about this man and I have put what I know on my website at http://www.reffell.org.uk/heroes/anthonyhughdenisonreffell.php

Apparently according to a brief notice in Flight magazine he was 'killed on active service', rather than 'killed in action'. Does anyone know if there is a difference.

I found a RAF Year book for the 1941 which shows him in training, but it looks like he completed it before he died. I have also looked at books detailing Bomber Command & Fighter Command losses, there does not seem to be one for General Duties losses that I can find.

His death is not listed in the GRO death index, nor the RAF index. I have also contacted the RAF Museum at Hendon who could not find anything about the man. Unfortunately there appears to be no kin that could get the record (if any) from the MOD.

All help & suggestions gratefully received!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / My Great Grandmother
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
Please find attached a photograph of my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Jones (1857-1938).

She married my great-grandfather who died early in life and was left to bring up three young children, including my grandfather who was under three at the time.

I would guess that this photograph was taken when she was around perhaps between 40 to 50, so was taken maybe around 1900, but I would appreciate a second opinion.

This one of only two photographs that I have of her, so I would greatly appreciate it if it can be enhanced and perhaps coloured.

Thanking you very much in advance.

Kent / Does anyone know Dover?
« on: Friday 01 February 08 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have just received a certificate of a marriage that took place in the Wesleyan Chapel at Dover in 1845.

I cannot find anything on the Internet about this place and wondered if anyone knows of it.

The addresses of the happy couple were given as Old Post Office Lane, Dover; and Finnis / or Tinnis Hill, Dover. I cannot find any reference to them either.

Thanks in advance.

Census and Resource Discussion / Can't get this occupation...
« on: Monday 03 December 07 08:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am stumped on this occupation...

It does not make sense to me, but someone else will probably spot it straight away!

This is from the 1851 census for Waltham Abbey and I cannot make out the top line. The lower line is (I believe) 'Housekeeper niece'.

All suggestions welcome  :)

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / 1906 Canada Census
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 08:39 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if some kind person could look up the details of someone in the 1906 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

I thought that I could access this on ancestry, but am only getting a padlock symbol (probably because I only have uk access  ;D ).

The person is Vernon McMartin of Manitoba, Winnipeg, born about 1894.

Thanking you in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Could this be GPO?
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 07:59 GMT (UK)  »
Attached is a photograph of my uncle George, who was killed during 1945 flying in a Lancaster over Germany.

This is obviously taken pre-war and I am guessing that the badge on his right-hand side is possibly what was then known as the General Post Office (GPO). However this is a guess and I could be wrong (I often is  ;) ).

All suggestions are appreciated and I am sorry about the quality of the photograph.

World War One / Paddington (Willesden Lane) war graves
« on: Saturday 13 October 07 11:06 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can throw some light on this one...

Yesterday I visited Paddington Old Cemetery (Willesden Lane) to photograph my grt-grandfather's grave.

I was distracted by looking at the war graves in this cemetery as they seemed to be a little unusual to me. Firstly, there was no Cross of Sacrifice, instead was a stone dedicated to 'the men of Paddington'. Secondly about three quarters of all the stones showed a date after the end of the First World War, up to about 1926. Lastly, many of the stones were set together, I have seen this where for example an aircrew crashed and they were all buried together, but the ones at Willesden were of different dates and regiments.

The CWGC website does not say anything exceptional about the place. I would appreciate other's views on this and have added a photograph below.

Thanks - John
