Canada / Isabella Chalmers from Scotland to Canada in 1916
« on: Wednesday 01 July 15 07:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have a shipping manifest for 'Athenia' departing Glasgow 29 Aug 1916 with Isabella Chalmers aged 45 and 3 daughters, Christina aged 11, Agnes aged 9 and Mary aged 7.  Her destination was Sault Ste Marie and she was to join her sons, George and Robt Chalmers and possibly a daughter Isabella.  There is a record of their arrival but its very difficult to read.

My question is what happened to them all after their arrival?  I have already done some work on son George who lived and died in Sault Ste Marie.

 http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=722348.0

I found the son Robt arriving Quebec 18 Sep 1912 on board 'Cassandra' also bound for Sault Ste Marie but I don't know what happened to him either. George and his wife Elizabeth arrived in November of the same year.

A possible complication is that the 3 daughters travelling with Isabella Chalmers (nee Paterson) were born to her second husband, Matthew Roy.  After he died in 1910 she and the children appear on the 1911 Scottish census as Roy but she seems to have reverted to Chalmers (her first husband's name) thereafter.

Is it possible to find them on a Canadian census?  They all had a rough start back in Scotland and I wondered if life got any better for them in Canada.

Regards, Sage.

Canada / Nellie Armitt to Canada in 1916...then what?
« on: Saturday 06 June 15 05:02 BST (UK)  »
Seeking help to find what became of Helen (Nellie) Cowan Armit(t) who travelled to Montreal aged 22 on board the 'Cassandra' departing Glasgow 21 Oct 1916.  She arrived in Quebec 06 Nov 1916 to stay with her sister, Mrs Andrew Bryson (Annie).

I haven't found her returning to Scotland via U.K. incoming passenger lists so as most of her family were already settled in Canada I imagine that she did too.  Annie Armitt and Andrew Bryson married in Stratton, Algoma in 1915 and another sister, Elizabeth and her husband Geo Chalmers settled in Korah, Algoma.

I have all the background info on her in Scotland, just wondered what became of her when she got to Canada.

Any help appreciated

Lanarkshire / James McLay born 1893 Glasgow
« on: Friday 05 June 15 07:01 BST (UK)  »
Hoping for some assistance to find James McLay said to have been born 20 April 1893 in Glasgow to William McLay and Janet Sweddon (not sure if that's a typo and should actually be Sneddon).  I was hoping that someone might be able to pinpoint him with his parents on the 1901 census.  I have him entering New York in 1921 and marrying Jean Armit in 1924.  I also wondered if he might have enlisted in Scotland in World War I because he registered in the U.S. for World War II at age 49.
With thanks, Sage.

United States of America / Jane/Jeanie Armit arrived New York in 1914
« on: Thursday 21 May 15 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Hoping to get some assistance please to locate Jeanie Armit born 01 Jun 1883 in Newmains, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  She sailed on the Cameronia from Glasgow in March 1914 and arrived in New York in April 1914.  I found her on the 1920 census in Manhattan aged 36, a servant in the King household...her occupation was 'cook'.  I haven't been able to find her after this time and can't be certain if she remained in the U.S. or travelled back to the U.K.

I have checked the SSDI and have not found her death under the name 'Armit' or similar so wondered if anyone might be able to help locate her after 1920. Any help appreciated.

Isle of Man / Janet Clucas nee Inglis married to George Joseph Clucas in 1859
« on: Monday 26 January 15 01:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help me glean some more information regarding Janet Inglis who was born in Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland circa 1834.  I'm hoping to be able to verify her parentage and wondered if that might have been detailed on her marriage record.  Family search have a record of the marriage 09 Apr 1859 in Braddan, Isle of Man and I wondered if anyone has researched the Clucas clan and is privy to this information or if I would need to get a cert.  If so would it have both parents or just the father?

I note that she had a son by the name of Robt Inglis Clucas in 1873 which might be a clue!

With thanks, Sage.

Lanarkshire / Peter Inglis Russell of Cleland, Shotts
« on: Saturday 29 November 14 06:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All...I am seeking to find Peter Inglis Russell born 29 May 1843 in Omoa, eldest son of Thomas and Janet Russell (nee Inglis).  He appears aged 7 with his parents in 1851 and again in 1861 aged 17 and a coal miner.  Each entry states his place of birth as Shotts.

His folk are still resident in Cleland in 1871 but he's not there and I've not been able to find him.  Can anyone please help?

Sage.

Lanarkshire / Thomas Hamilton/Marion Inglis from Hamilton
« on: Saturday 30 November 13 21:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I'm having a little trouble finding out what happened to the above mentioned couple and their family.  In 1841 they are at Cadzow St Hamilton:

Thos aged 31, a porter (all born Lanarkshire)
Merrion aged 30
Janet aged 9
Ann aged 5
Thos Jnr aged 3
Merrion Jnr aged 3 mths

Jump a decade to 1851 and I found Thos Jnr & Ann living with their uncle, Robt Inglis in Shotts.  Ann is 15 and a house servant born Hamilton and Thos is a scholar aged 13, born Hamilton.

In 1861 I think I found Thos Jnr, a Labourer (Lodger) aged 24 and born Hamilton at Charlotte Lane, St Andrew, Glasgow in the reg. district of Calton living with the family of Charles and Mary Hamilton...so most likely a relative.

My question is what happened to Thos & Marion Hamilton (Snr)...is it possible there would be burial records for them in Hamilton as far back as 1841 - 1851?  I have Marion born 01 Feb 1807 Omoa Newtown to James Inglis & Janet Nisbet. I don't know anything of Thos Hamilton's background but it's the Inglis family I have been researching.

...and can anyone follow Thos Jnr beyond 1861 and also Ann who was aged 15 in 1851 or even Janet aged 9 in 1841 and Marion Jnr aged 3 mths who weren't with Thos and Ann Jnr in 1851?

Any and all help gratefully received...with thanks, Sage.

Lanarkshire / Census Look-up for Wm Campbell & Ann Fleming please
« on: Sunday 11 August 13 06:56 BST (UK)  »
I am currently researching the above Ann Fleming born circa 1853 in Gartsherrie, Old Monkland to John Fleming and Elizabeth Paterson.  She married Wm Campbell 31 Dec 1873 in Cambusnethan and I wonder would someone be able to find them with family after this marriage date.  I'm specifically interested in Jane/Jeanie Campbell said to be born to Wm and Ann about 1880 who later married someone by the name of NEIL.  I have looked for this marriage on S/P but can't find a match in Cambusnethan so am a bit hesitant to jump in and waste credits.

I have Jeanie's second marriage and death but would like some more details re the first marriage so I can maybe locate her on the 1911 census with some certainty.

Any help appreciated...with thanks, Sage.

Hi All...Hoping for assistance to find information regarding the death of Arthur Wright who died of 'multiple injuries and shock' after an accident at the Kirkland Steel Works (Leven) 12 Feb 1954.

Not sure if there might have been a newspaper report of the incident at the time and if it might be possible to get some more details about the accident and cause of death.

Any assistance gratefully received,
