The Common Room / Re: Your New RootsChat is here

Trystan, why not start a "RC wishlist" thread, so people can post suggestions ?

There is only one thing on RC that really irritates me, and this is not entirely new.  On other forums that I frequent (not genealogical ones, I might add), the forum somehow remembers where I'd got to in the individual threads.   For example, on logging in to RC today, the forum would remember that I'd read up to post #56 on "Your New Roots Chat is here" and clicking on it would take me to the last read message in that thread.  I know this topic is one of the fastest-growing threads on the forum, but it's a bit of a pain going back from page 31 to page 15, without several laborious mouse clicks.  A drop-down box for getting to a page number would be useful too.

One more thing - it may also be advisable to check to see if there is an add-on for your particular browser which might give more control over the appearance of web pages.

Technical Help / Upgrade to Windows 8 for 24.99 (offer ends 31/01/2013)
« on: Friday 21 December 12 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone in the UK brave enough to upgrade to Windows 8 can download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for 24.99 - offer ends 31/1/2013.

See for full details.

Note that this price is for the download version - you will need a fairly fast broadband connection to download it.

OK, all finished - please feel free to comment or question  :)

Click on "Customise & Control" (usually an icon with 3 horizontal lines)

Select Settings

At the bottom of the screen that appears, click on "Show Advanced Options" at the bottom of the page.

A paragraph headed "Web Content" will appear.

Within that paragraph are buttons that will change Font, Font Size and page zoom.  I've not included a picture because Chrome settings are not always the same, and will also depend on whether you have a Google account.

Firefox (versions 9.0 upwards)

Click on Tools >> Options then click on Content in the table that appears.

You can then choose the default fonts and font sizes.

Internet Explorer

Click on Tools (may just be a toothed wheel icon), then Internet Options.

Click on Fonts at the Bottom of the Table in the General tab.

This will bring up another table showing the Font options....

Technical Help / How to set your browser defaults - for various browsers (see below)
« on: Friday 21 December 12 14:01 GMT (UK)  »
Since the launch of the new version of the RootsChat forum, some people have commented about the fonts and font sizes on this new version.  Users of the forum can make their own changes to a certain extent, using the settings for their choice of web browser.  Web pages are not received by your computer as pictures - they are a mess of computer code, and it is the job of your web browser to interpret this code to produce a web page.  Some parts of web pages cannot be changed, because changing them would have detrimental effects on other parts of the page.  The following posts will take you through how to change the font settings on the main 'brands' of browser.

Note: I'd advise people to make a note of their existing default settings, so they can revert to them if they make unsuitable choices.

Look at the top of each post....

You'll see the post title, then underneath it will say "Reply #123, posted today 9:45AM" (or something similar)  :)
