Dumfriesshire / Re: Samuel Wolves Hounam - burial Stoneykirk? Solved.

Thank you.  I visited Kirkmandine Burial ground today and found Samuel’s grave.  What a setting on a glorious sunny day.

Obviously the local paper had not reported his burial place accurately.

Mission accomplished - thanks for posting.

Bruce.

Wow!

Thank you so much.  I'd a quick look round Stoneykirk cemetery yesterday, but it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.  I wonder if the headstone is still visible.

Samuel is my 2nd cousin, once removed.

You've added a lot more than ever I expected - thank you again.

Dumfriesshire / Samuel Wolves Hounam - burial Stoneykirk?
« on: Wednesday 27 April 22 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Can someone help locate the grave of Samuel Wolves Hounam, b 1896 at Giinockie, Canonbie and who died 2 June 1918? He died of a brain tumour at Kildonan and was in the 11th Battalion Black Watch.

His father and mother were both teachers at Stoneykirk on their marriage in 1894.

By the time of Samuel’s birth, in 1896, his father, John Hounam, was a teacher at Gilnockie school, Canonbie, however his wife Marion (and Samuel’s mother) is recorded as dying at Kildonan in 1897 when Samuel was one year old.

I assume that mother was buried at Stoneykirk.  The announcement of Samuel’s death in the local Langholm paper says that he was buried at Stoneykirk ~ perhaps in the same grave as his mother.

I cannot locate the stone in either the old or new Stonekirk cemeteries.

Samual Wolves Hounam is mentioned on WW1 memorials at Gilkockie; Canonbie Church; Canonbie War Memorial and also Edinburgh University War Memorial.

A complicated family to research as John Hounam has a further two wives!

Thank you for any help,  Bruce.

World War Two / Special Communications Unit No3

A friend has been going through her father's WW2 collection.  She emailed me the attached photo (I'm hoping to get a better one).

The wording states:

This soldier has been enlisted for special duty, on termination of which he is entitled to a free discharge under K.R.’s para 390 XVIII (c).  This man has permission to wear civilian clothes.

Indecipherable signature
Capt
For
Lieut.-Colonel
Commanding, S.C.U. No. 3

Any suggestions for the signature and to whom this might be issued?

Thank you.

Bruce

The local newspaper started in 1848 and has been partially indexed.  It might be worth a look:

Good luck

Dumfriesshire / Re: Langholm: Names- Wolves, Hounam, Blackmere

Thank you for that.

Samuel Wolves was Sheriff Officer before becoming Baron Baillie for the Duke - there's several reports in old Dumfries newspapers.  He's described as "formidable" in one of the Langholm books.

I like to think that maybe he was responsible for sending his (about-to-be) David Hounam relative to Dumfries jail for a week.

An old receipt book of a Langholm merchant showed that Samuel bought whisky!

Samuel Wolves is my GGG Grandfather.

His origins and ancestry have been a complete brick wall for me for the past 20 years or so!  You summarise quite succinctly almost all I know about him.

He was buried in Wauchope Cemetery, Langholm, on 10 Jan 1832, but I have yet to find any trace of a grave.

Caithness / Aboard the "Jean" off Wick - 1945
« on: Tuesday 21 April 20 09:54 BST (UK)  »
The attached photo has ’aboard the “Jean” off Wick’ and dated May 1945.

The people are labelled (right to left!) as Cliff Norton, Self, Tom McLaughlan, John Lightfoot, Joe Beck.  “Self” is David Welsh from near Kelso - he was a wireless operator during WW2 and post-war kept his radio interest as radio amateur GM3BFU.

The five look very happy - perhaps this is not long after VE Day?

Any information about the “Jean” would be welcome.

Thank you

Still unearthing the occasional "new" Hounam.

You might find    http://www.langholmarchive.org.uk - the local Newspaper index useful
