Can anyone help with the population of the counties of

Berwickshire
Selkirkshire
Roxburghshire
Peeblesshire

in 1971 and 1981

I just cannot find links after searching through Google.

Many thanks,

The site of "Fore Row" is now within Drumlanrig Square in the west end of Hawick.

If Fore Street and Fore Row are the same, then according to "Hawick Place Names" published 1947, Fore Row occupied the south side, Mid Row the centre and Back Row the north side.  (There's no entry for "Fore Street")

I'm not sure about Bridge Street (no entry in the above book), but there is a North Bridge Street "from their leading to and from the north.  First house 1845."

There's many pictures of old Hawick in "Pictures from the Past of Auld Hawick" by Vernon and McNairn published 1911.  I see a copy on abebooks.co.uk just now.

I hope this may help.

Adding a little bit more to HDW's post:
Mary Brydon was daughter of James Brydon, b 1815 in Castleton, and Esther Laidlaw b ca 1819 in Hawick.

Mary's sister, Betsy Scott (b 1843, Hawick, ms Brydon) had four children, one of whom, Esther Scott b 1874, Hawick, married John Pettigrew mentioned in Harry's post in 1907.

Esther Scott's uncle, Walter Scott, b May 1836, was co-founder, along with William Lyle, of the Hawick hosiery firm Lyle and Scott.

Attached is a photograph of a Peter Scott "Mill Picnic" from happier times in the early 1950s - perhaps someone can identify the location.

If it's any help, Knottyholme has been variously spelt more recently as Knittyholm and Nittyholm, with a photos on http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/333404 and also http://www.langholmpicturearchive.com/

I'm sure that there is a big difference in your idea of sharing with people you meet, than there is in openly saying on RootsChat for all the world to see

if anyone needs info from the langholm parish memorial
i have a cd from them with the info on

i will look anything up for u

I'm sure there would be a "big stink" if Langholm Archive Society decided not to distribute any more of the memorial booklets.

Presumably that would apply to purchasers of CDs too.

I'm all for folk helping each other, but it would be nice to see added ... info obtained from such and such a source.

Dumfriesshire / Mein family ~ Langholm Grammar School

Langholm Archive Centre gets many requests.  The one below completely "floored" us, perhaps you can help?

quote ...  I'm just cleaning up the last few loose ends in the Mein Family History book
before it goes to the printer next week.

One of these 'loose ends' regards the Langholm Grammar School c.a.1720's.
Would you know whether this school DID exist, and if the building still
remains.
If it no longer remains, would you know its former address and a little
about the school?

Can someone help?

Thanks WalterC

Hello Moschops

I let Harry know about your post, and now that I've see your reply to it, I have to admit to being confused.

I've sent a personal message with a list of Pettigrews, but none seem to tie in with yours.

I've an Archibald marrying an Isabella Miller but the info I have about them is that Archibald was born in Ireland, and Isabella in Roxburghshire; confusingly, they have a son, Daniel, born 1863!  I can't find an Archibald born 1863.

The Archibald above died in 1887, so possibly he would be the one in the census you noted.

Entering "Forgebraehead" into the "E & L" index coughs up 6 returns.  The index now goes from 1848 to 1873.
