World War One / WW1 unknown badges
« on: Monday 10 November 14 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
I've had these in a drawer for a while, they originate with my husbands family, but I don't know who. I'm hoping that someone can tell me what they are as this may help  ???

I believe that the Tank Corps is a cap badge & from WW1  ???

I've no idea what the ribbons relate to.

Is the 'croix de guerre' type badge a copy or something as there is no date on the reverse?

Thanks in advance for any help / info you can give me

Antrim / John JAMES and Catherine marriage Belfast
« on: Saturday 30 August 14 16:22 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a marriage for John JAMES b. abt. 1780 Welshpool, Montgomeryshire and Catherine b. abt. 1780 Belfast.

According to the 1851 John is a Sergeant & Chelsea Pensioner. Their son John was born in Welshpool in 1810, there's another possible son from 1841 b. abt. 1820 also in Wales. From this I'm assuming that they married 1800-1810.
I can't find a marriage in Wales, although searching in Wales with the name JAMES isn't too promising :)
As he was in the army I assume (lot of that going on) that he could have met & married Catherine in Belfast.
John jnr has a son John Croken JAMES and I've been unable to find a reason for this unusual middle name, I wonder if this is Catherine's maiden name??
I'm be grateful if SKS would be able to look up marriages around this time for me.
Thank you in advance

Lancashire / Edmund Mercer & Anne Wignal married by licence
« on: Monday 14 July 14 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Edmund Mercer & Anne Wignal m. 5th June 1792 Downham, Lancashire

I discovered the following on FindMyPast under Cheshire Marriage licence bonds & allegations ( shortened version I got fed up typing  :) )

Know all men by these Presents That we Edmund Mercer of Downham in the parish of Whalley in the County of Lancaster & Diocese of Chester, Innkeeper & William Mercer of the said Downham, Husbandman are holden and bound unto the right reverend father in god William by divine permission, Lord Bishop of Chester
in the sum of 100 pounds, of good and lawful money of Great Britain, is to be paid unto the said ………………….
"Sealed with our seals and dated the third day of June in the thirty second year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third KIng of Great Britain etc. 1792

The condition of this obligation is such, that if the above bounden Edmund Mercer & Anne Wignal now be licensed to be married together, be neither of consanguinity, or affinity etc.

Signed by Edmund and William Mercer
"

I wonder why they would have needed a licence as going by their ages in 1841 they were both over 21. Edmund born c.1768 and Anne c. 1758, I haven't been able to find births that I can be sure of.

I'm guessing that the signatories are Edmund, the groom, and his father, although it's also possible that this Edmund is his father & that William is an uncle??

I'm hoping that someone knows the ins & outs of these things  :D
Thanks

The Common Room / GRO certificates
« on: Friday 23 May 14 10:06 BST (UK)  »
I've just received a marriage certificate, such a saddo I was excited on opening the envelope  :)

I was then quite disappointed that the details were printed & not a photocopy of the original. I know that I still get the same information, but it doesn't feel the same  :(

There is also the point that this is in effect a transcription and therefore open to error and interpretation.

Is there any way to avoid this in the future or is it just random?

Thanks all

Armed Forces / ECROYD naval records
« on: Tuesday 08 April 14 11:49 BST (UK)  »
John Reginald ECROYD

My grandfather served in the Royal Navy as a carpenter/joiner and was demobbed in March 1919, I’m unsure if he joined up again after WW1 and am wondering how I can check.

I’ve found him on the Navy pension lists with a seniority date of 30/12/1967, but don’t know what this means.

I understand that service records are available from the MOD, however at a cost of £30. Does anyone know when these are likely to be available through the National Archives?

Thanks for any help
Jacqui

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Landrake marriage 1738
« on: Friday 03 January 14 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
I have the following info from the Cornish OPC website, a transcript from Phillimores

6th Jan 1738 Landrake, Hugh ROGERS m. Frances JEPMAN

however I think that JEPMAN should possibly be CHAPMAN as they later have a daughter Mary Chapman Rogers.

I should be grateful if someone who has access to the originals could check if this is a mistranscription.

Thank you in advance
Jacqui

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Jersey, St Martin’s – CORAM
« on: Wednesday 01 January 14 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Jacob Coram b. 1837 from Kingsand, Cornwall who married Elizabeth ? from St Martin’s Jersey.

They had 8 children all born St Martin’s the first Jacob W b. 1864 up to Albert b. 1884.
Jacob Snr died between 1891 – 1901, but as he was a sailor might not have been on the island.

I’d be grateful for the date of marriage & Elizabeth’s maiden name.

Thank you for your assistance
