London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Saint Matthew, Bethnal Green 1797
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 19:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

According to the Saint Matthew's Parish Register (*)this marriage took place on 10 December 1797.  The record indicates that they were both from the Bethnal Green parish and does not mention who their parents were.

Other Countries / INDIA: John Craigie (1748-1795) East India Company
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 19:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My ancester Dr John Craigie (1748 to 1795) married Jacoba Helena Van As (1752 to 1837).  I believe he was of scottish origin and worked for the Bengal Medical Corps - part of the East India Company.

I have managed to research their children and Jacoba's family, who were fairly long term South Africans' and decent from Angela of Bengal, fairly well, but I am stuck on finding out information about him.  Being a doctor and an officer, I thought this would be simple, but it does not appear to be.  It is does not help that there is another John Craigie who is associated with the East India company.

I am struggling to find a marriage record for John and Jacoba, which might include the name of his father and give me something to go on!  Admittedly, this marriage record may be in South Africa where Jacoba was from, but John's work with the East India company, together with their first child, Harriett Sarah Craigie, being born in Cozimbazer, India, makes me believe it could just as easily be in India.  They would have been married in the 1780s.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find the marriage record, or be able to find know any information about John?

PS: Will place a similar request on South Africa board too.

South Africa / Craigie and Van As

I am wondering whether or not John and Jacoba married in South Africa - in which case the records might include the name of John's father.  Their first child was Harriet Sarah Craigie, born in mid to late 1780s, so they must have been in the early 1780s.  This would likely have been around Cape Town, as the rest of Jacoba's family did all their baptisms, marriages and burials around there, but this is no guarantee.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find the marriage record, or be able to find know any information about John?

PS: Will place a similar request on India board too.

Hi Nell,

Thank you very, very much for this.  It certainly looks like the correct family - when you say transcripts, do you mean parish register.

If so, are you aware of transcripts being available for the earlier and later births in Overton/Laverstoke, as I could try and locate these or put out alternate 'cry for help'

I found a marrige for Edith Gertude Mappin to an alternative person.  She also appears in the same 1901 census as Grace Gordon Graham, so was recorded as a separate person.

To continue the saga,

Grace Wilbey Gordon/and or Graham married clearly with the surname Gordon-Graham and her deceased father Edward was also recorded with Gordon-Graham as his surname on the marriage certificate.  She married a John Austen Kean Lane, who I have been able to search successfully.

This younger Grace is actually my grandmother's own grandmother.  I have verbally asked my grandmother, Julia, about this side of the family to see if she had any clues.  UnfortuantelyI was told that this younger Grace disowned my grandmother due to disapproving of her parents marriage.  Apparently Grace would ignore all her grandchildren if she saw them on the street etc, which is even more surprising given that these were the children of her only child Renee.  The upshot of this is that my grandmother knows next to nothing about this side of her family.  It's part of the reason that I am keen to solve the mystery.

Going down a further generation, my mother Suzanne remembers Renee being able to speak French and having French books around the house.  Renee is also a French name, as is Grace, and my mother's own name: Suzanne.  There is therefore a possibility of France being involved here somewhere, although the census do indicate that Grace Mappin and Grace Gordon-Graham were both born in England.

Here are the full birth certificate name details for the children:

First Name: Grace Wilbey, Surname: GORDON, Father Edward Wilbey GORDON (no Graham this time) - Father's profession is a Commercial traveller.

RE: Name query on census for eldest son.

I am assuming that Jack is actually Edward, and was known as Jack to not mix him up with his father.  The birth certificate dates support Jack and Edward being the same person.

Here is where the problem begins.

All three of the children's birth certificates refer to the name Edith Grace Mappin as being their mother.  Yet, the 1901 census has the 1875 birth date.    The census could be inaccurate,  Tbut the 1911 census says Grace was 37 and born in London, so the birth date would be around 1874.

Admittedly there could be two women with the name Grace here, but I also can't find a death certificate for an Edith Grace Gordan and/or Graham.  I also can't find an earlier birth record that could be Grace's!

I can find no marriage certificate for an Edith Grace Mappin being married to an Edward Gordon and/or Graham.  Also, he is not at home during the 1901 census and Grace is a widow by the 1911 census, so I can find little or nothing of him as well.

Rather annoyingly this was quite a well to do family with a governess, so the written information should be a bit easier to find in some opinions.
