Monaghan / Re: Monaghans & Bentincks of Glasslough, Co.Moneghan
« on: Thursday 18 January 07 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found the family of my Theresa living in england in 1851. Her parents were Francis Monaghan and Sarah Ryan. They had two children born in Co Monaghan - John, abt 1842, Anne, abt 1846, their next child Hugh was born in Ovingham, Northumberland in 1848. This means they must have moved over in abt 1847. As previously mentioned family ledgend states the family were from Glasslough. Francis was b. abt 1822, Sarah abt. 1825. I am told Sarah had Spanish/Moorish origins, and although most of her childrens birth certificate states her maiden name as Ryan, she is also refered to as Sarah Serrano in one record.

If anyone can suggest how I can find out more, for instance birth records for or a marriage record that would be grately appreciated. They were Catholics.

Many thanks

Nikki

Hi,

I have sent of for Frederick's birth certificate and it confirms the mothers name as Sarah County. I will try and send for a wedding certificate in the next few wks to see if I can get any more clues with regards to parents.

Thanks

Hi,

Obviously I still need to confirm the link with the Charles Cook Sheppard and Sarah Stuckey marriage. However I have found the following:

1841 census
Sarah Stuckey, 35, Umbrella Maker
Sarah, 15
George, 13
Caroline, 8
Margaret, 2
living in St Sepulchre without Newgate Middlesex
This is the only Stuckey family in London as far as I can see.

Also living in St Sepulcher is a Charles Sheppard, aged 25. I can not make out his occupation - looks like MJ? He is living/working at the ? Keys Inn - maybe Cross Keys Inn?

This was only the year before Sarah and Charles Cook married and before their first child was born - however Sarah is ver young, and in the 1818 census she is about 8 years older than the Sarah Stuckey in 1841.

I have also found a Sarah Shepherd (not Sheppard) born 1818 in the 1881 census, b. Stepney, living in Islington, a widow. This matches up with the 1861 census.

I will definately send off for a birth certificate of Fredk - my descendent to confirm her maiden name.

I have Frederick's marriage certificate at home but I will need to check the details and get back to you. It does give the father's name as Charles, and I have come across the entry you mention below before as a prospective marriage for his parents. I will try and send off for a birth certificate.

Thanks

Hi,

In the 1861 census entry listed above it says that Sarah Sheppard is married not widowed. So maybe Charles was working away from home? I am still looking for more info on this family, very frustrating! I have found a 28 year old James Sheppard in 1871 census living in Warwick, he is a gold smith so I wonder if he is perhaps my Fredericks older brother?

Any help would be great! :-)

No, it is definately Theresa's family in the 1851 census, although she was not born till 1857. I have searched and can not find her so I think it all points to her being abroad at this time. With regards to James George Moore whom she later married, he was born in Portrush, Balleymoney, Antrim, according to 'family ledgend'. He originally moved to Leeds where he joined the army and was a soldier for a time.

Hi,

Where did you find the staff list? I am pretty sure Teresa didn't work for the Earl of St Maur but her sister Sarah Jane Monaghan Serrano had strong connections with them, after becoming governess for Don Francisco Gisbert, the Spanish Consular of Tangier. I am in contact with the man who wrote that website and you will see that Sarah is mentioned on the page you linked to. It was through Sarah's connections that she secured Theresa's job. I am told Theresa could speak french and picked this up whilst working in Belgium as governess to a Duke's children. Maybe there are some other Dukes I can investigate? I believe it was about early 1880s because she is present in both the 1871 an 91 census but I haven't been able to trace her in 1881 and she was married in Newcastle in 1885.

Is there a Belgium census do you think?

Thanks

Nikki

I can not find my Theresa Monaghan from Northumberland/Durham in the 1881 census. Rumour has it she was governess for the Duke & Duchess of Fife but she may have lived in Belgiam with them for a time, maybe this is where she was in 1881? Her older sister Sarah Pasola (nee Monaghan) was duchess to Don Francisco Gisbert, the Spanish Consular of Tangier in about 1880. She got her job through the Spanish Embassy and she then got Teresa's job through her connections. As both of the ladies were likely to be governesses abroad I am unsure if I can find anything to confirm their postings?
