The Lighter Side / Re: Don't always believe your relations!!
« on: Wednesday 27 June 07 19:13 BST (UK)  »
These old family stories often bear investigation. One of ours was that we were related to minor nobility . . . I even have copies of begging letters written in victorian times to prove the legend has been in existence for many generations. I don't imagine they were successful . . . the addressee was a banker!

After extensive research I still haven't found anything conclusive, but it looks as if I might just be a 12th cousin to an extinct baronetcy . . . the possible common ancestor having died in 1581 . . .   ::)

I have a young walnut tree in my garden grown from a walnut from my aunt's tree, which she grew from a walnut from her grandmother's garden . . . do you think perhaps I should get out more?  ::)

Here they are again with the details:

Crewe 1851 -  HO107/2169/244/9
William Winby 53  H[ead] of F[amily] Railway Clerk b.Kirton, Lancs
Mary Winby 44  Wife b.Kingston-upon-Hull
Robert Winby 24  Son Mechanic b.Liverpool
Ann E Winby 21  Daur b.Liverpool
William E Winby 16  Son Mechanic b.Liverpool
Henry F Winby 13  Son Scholar b.Liverpool
Clifford O Winby 11 Son Scholar b.Hartford [the 'O' could possibly be an 'E' on the original]
Frederick C Winby 9  Son Scholar b.Hartford
John Holmes Winby 7  Son Scholar b.Crewe
Alfred A Winby 6  Son Scholar b.Crewe
[Georgina] Emily Winby 1  Daur b.Crewe
Jane Murray 19 Daughter House Servant b.Nantwich
Mary Frances Murray 3  Daughter

Jane looks like 'Daughter' on the form but transcribed as 'Sister' . . . but definitely 'Daughter for Mary on both . . . could Jane be a married daughter and Mary be Jane's daughter?  Marriage status is not shown.

Mother's name was Jane King (maiden name Mckinley). Could George Steel be her second husband (and consequently Mary's step-father)? . . . or could it be a mistake? . . . William Nielson's mother's maiden name directly above was also Steel.

Very intriguing.

Someone made a pretty poor job of scanning that, considering the original handwriting looks very neat!

But the first section looks to me like:

On the tenth day of September 1857 at Meadowside Parish of Shotts Marriage (after Banns) was solemnized [between?] according to the [----?] of the Unithed Brethren[?] Church

About the best I can do I'm afraid.
