The Stay Safe Board / Re: State of emergency (part 2)

Best idea I've heard so far is one or two shops having a special OAP's hour before opening to the general public. Might be tricky to police, but would be rather good if it spreads to the main supermarkets  8)

Might be worth making sure all old printers are uninstalled before trying to connect to the new one  :-\

Technical Help / Re: Wireless mouse
« on: Wednesday 19 February 20 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
I believe the wireless mouse and keyboard use a radio signal, not an infra-red beam, so no line of sight is necessary. I have used both with no problems, in fact I often forget the keyboard I'm using now, on a pull out shelf, is a Logitech wireless one  ::)

Technical Help / Re: Wireless Keyboard required.
« on: Friday 14 February 20 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
I've been using a Logitech K350 keyboard for almost a year now, on the original batteries. I often forget it is wireless and seldom remember to switch it off after a session. The only thing missing is the Caps Lock light, presumably as a battery saving measure. If you install the Logitech software there are extra features including Caps Lock indicator on the Windows task bar, but I don't find the need to use this.

This is a good keyboard for serious use, including touch-typing . . . which I almost do  :-\ ::)

Andrew,
Thanks for the information. Expect I'll end up trying to sort it out for her when I have some free time  ::)

The Common Room / Re: Why Golden?
« on: Monday 13 January 20 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
I know nothing about the origins of it, but I have come across several people (usually male) in old records with the first name "Golden". There was also a man living locally with that name a few years ago.

If you're getting a Windows machine, beware of some of the 'mini-laptops' or netbooks. Most of them have very small (usually solid-state) hard drives and limited RAM. A friend bought one and it will now not accept the latest Windows upgrade due to lack of space. They're cheap for a reason!

If you plan to do any serious work on it, I would go for a proper laptop every time. As said by others, netbooks and chromebooks are really just used as terminals to access online software in the 'cloud' (i.e. someone else's computer)

The Common Room / Re: Making a family story book - suggestions advice needed
« on: Tuesday 07 January 20 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
When I started writing my still far from finished book I found that I had lots of information about a few particular families or individuals so I eventually settled on making a whole chapter about each of these, writing their story in narrative form, including photos where available, but adding a few charts, maps, etc. I also found it useful to add a little historic context, such as pointing out that, "... of course there were no railways at this time so his journey would have taken many days ..."

It is all too easy (especially in my case) to write something resembling an old school textbook, which will rapidly put off the average reader. I think I will eventually make one book of factual information with charts, dates, etc. and another with the narrative story, which will necessarily leave out a lot of the bare facts for the sake of readabiility, but I think most readers would expect to see a few traditional family trees to show the relationships.

All of which reminds me it's about time I got back to some writing after neglecting that aspect of my research for so long  :-[
