London and Middlesex / John WEBB, date of birth and place of birth unknown
« on: Friday 19 November 10 15:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I wonder if anyone can help with this message that was sent to me?

Quote
John WEBB, date of birth and place of birth unknown, married a Mary MOUNTGOMERY at Chatham, St. Marys on 20.11.1764(CityArk)   John is OTP., but Mary was of the Parish of St. James and I am trying to find out which St. James Parish Mary came from as it is possible that John originally came from the same parish, but came to Chatham for employment possibly in the Dockyard, and when he was able, sent for his "childhood sweetheart".    I have found no trace of a Mary MOUNTGOMERY in St. James, Cooling., or St. James Grain.

The later generations of the Webb family were naval men, either mariners Coastguard or RN, or employed at a dockyard, Chatham, Sheerness or Deptford, possibly shipwrights.   I did find a Mary MOUNTGOMERY, baptised 1740 at St. James Westminster, IGI, but understand that the Parishes of Westminster are a distance from the Thames and if John was a shipwright or similar he would possibly have come from a parish closer to "water" ?

My chief objective is to find out where John WEBB came from and his wife Mary MOUNTGOMERY.

Focusing on St. James as far as I can make out it is not too far away from The Thames where there could have been a dockyard or ship builder at that time. After all in those days walking miles was a regular thing for work.

Cheers John

Europe / Translation of Spanish PDF?
« on: Tuesday 19 October 10 13:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

Further to my research of the whereabouts of Leslie Charles LONGHURST elsewhere on this forum I have tried to make sense of a pdf that I downloaded http://www.bopsctfe.es/2003/06/080/Bop080-03.pdf. Because it is 88 pages long I haven't really been successful. The particular area of interest to me is on page 26 concerning this entry
Quote
LONGHURST LESLIE CHARLES 380102521601 417,99 1196 A 0599       19/05/2003
. Looking at previous pages I think it is a list of people who have debts in Tenerife ? I would like to find out what I can of this just in case it has any relevance to my search for Leslie.

So if anyone can help me that would be great, it may end up another brick wall, but perhaps it will eventually help me find out where Leslie ended up. Although he was born in 1924 and this record is for June 2003 it would be possible he eventually came back a bit closer to home when he was old.

Thanks a lot.

Kent / 12 Brockman Road, Folkstone - 1901
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 22:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks

On of my ancestors Walter LORD aged 12, is shown on the 1901 census as living as a Boarder at 12 Brockman Road, Folkstone. There are a few other children with various surnames there also. I though at first it may have been a small private school but am not so sure now.

Walter was actually born in Wimbledon, Surrey and his family is living at 10 Graham Road, Wimbledon, Surrey in 1901.

Can anyone shed light on what sort of place 12 Brockman Road was? If it was a school are there any school records anywhere?

PS. I have looked through the Historical Directories site but couldn't seem to find it.

Thanks
John

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with profession/occupation

Hi folks,

I've seen the work you wizards do here so would anyone like to clean up/decipher what the words are under the lines that were crossed through the image later please?

The line in question is the one that starts with 'M 70' and ends with 'at Work'. My GGfather was 70 and I believe was retired from the army at 40 and became a Chelsea Pensioner.

Thanks a lot.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Leslie Charles LONGHURST AWOL from ship? *COMPLETED*
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 22:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks

A very long shot but here goes.

An uncle of mine Leslie Charles LONGHURST b 6 February 1924 Gravesend, Kent, England went missing some time after about 1960. We know that he travelled quite a bit around the world as up until that time we received parcels from him from various places. In the past the Salvation Army has tried to trace him without success, but that was some years ago now.

I have recently been told by a cousin that her deceased dad had also been trying to find Les. She also told me that she was pretty certain that Leslie had jumped ship, (merchant navy)? while his ship was in New Zealand. He had settled there and had got into some sort of trouble with the Police. ATM I'm not sure if he went to prison or not but perhaps he changed his name after that.

We think he might have married again, his first wife having been murdered in 1950 in Northumberland, England.

He had 1 daughter only with his first wife and at one time she was looking for him as well but has since given up. As I am now researching my family genealogy I would like to resolve this mystery.

If anyone can help me with any sort of lookups or info it would be very welcome indeed.

Thanks
John

Census and Resource Discussion / Unknown Characters in 1901 Column 17
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 23:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks

In the 1901 census image I have, in column 17 which is for noting disabilities etc there is an addition that I can't work out.
It is against a couple of the entries and is also further down on selected ones.
Any ideas what it might denote?

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Elizabeth HARMAN's father, which one?
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 19:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I have Elizabeth HARMAN b 1830 Surrey d. 1902 Gravesend.
She married William TURNER, b 1825 at Reigate, Surrey 9/12/1849.
I had Elizabeth's parents as Henry HARMAN and Sarah BROOKER.
This was in some work that was done by somebody else but all seems verified.

I ordered a marriage cert from GRO (1849 qtr=D Vol=0IV Page=481)

On the cert all items match until Elizabeth's father's names - James HARMAN. ?

I've had a look at the 1841 and 1851 census, and some parish records for that period, but cannot seem to prove or disprove who is who.

It may be that I have the right cert, but can't see where the other data went wrong or of course vice versa. All help welcome.

Thanks

John

Kent Lookup Requests / Marriage Frederick Forster 1853
« on: Friday 28 May 10 21:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi could someone have a look and see if they can find the following marriage details please?

Frederick Forster married Elizabeth Burford Gravesend 1853. I have found this on FreeBMD and it says Q4 1853 Gravesend 2a 397. The problem is that I can't find out the name of the church otherwise I could look it up on CityArc.

I'm trying to find the names of parents and address.

This is not actually for me as such just trying to help someone.

Thanks
