London and Middlesex / 1871 census - Occupation "Professional" ??
« on: Thursday 08 August 13 08:07 BST (UK)  »
What would a woman, definitely working class" whose occupation is given as "Professional" in the 1871 census have done for a living?

This is another question about Julia Venturney!!  ::) I thought it meant "Prostitute", but now I am not sure anymore as nothing concrete seems to point to that.  Julia was with her father at the time, and I can't see him saying that if he knew it meant prostitute....

Does anyone have any ideas, please?

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Charlotte and Rosina Venturney - where are they buried?
« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 13:07 BST (UK)  »
Help please!!

I have another thread going about Julia Cooke/Venturney and her connection to Jack the Ripper (here is the link :http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=653794.0).

As you can see, I now have a lot of information including the death certs of Rosina and Charlotte.

I had been hoping to go the London Met Archives when I am in London next week but they are shut on a Friday, which is the only day I can go >:(

Rosina died in the London County Asylum on the 21 October 1903 aged 36. In her death cert her name is given as "Rosina Ventorini"
Charlotte died on the 16 July 1885 at the Infirmary Baker's Row aged 16.  Her name is given as "Charlotte Ventreney".

Where would they have been buried?  If I understand rightly, the two institutions had burial grounds - does anyone know whether there is anything to see there?

Secondly, I was hoping to consult workhouse/asylum records at the LMA -  is there anywhere else I could see the records (date of entrance into the asylum etc etc)?

Many thanks for any help or advice

London and Middlesex / Julia Venturney née Cooke..... and Jack the Ripper!
« on: Sunday 14 July 13 14:22 BST (UK)  »
I have just come back to my genealogy after quite a long break, and am trying to find information about Julia Venturney née Cooke.  She is the daughter of my Gtx3 Grandfather Richard Cooke and married Antonio Venturney.   They had two daughters Rosina Antonet Julia born in 1864 in Fulham (I have baptism record) and Charlotte (or Charlotta) Ann born in 1868.  Rosiana's surname in the records is given as Venteney.

I have Julia and her two daughters in the 1871 census, when they are living with her father, Richard in Fulham, at No 2 Little John's Place.  I think Richard died in 1893, I cannot find him in 1881 or 1891.

Now to Jack the Ripper!!  Julia was, apparently, a witness at the inquest into the murder of Mary Ann Kelly!!  In 1871, Julia's profession is "Professional" which, I think, meant "prostitute".

There are a couple of interesting forums (now closed) on internet, giving information about Julia at the inquest.  One piece of information even says that Mary Ann Kelly might have been killed by mistake, as Jack the ripper was really aiming for Julia :o  Apparently Mary Ann was younger than his other victims, and he might have seen Julia leaving her house......  At the time of the inquest Julia was living at 1 Miller's Court, this was in November 1888.

In her testimony, Julia Venturney described herself as a widow and said that at the time of Kelly's murder she was living at 1 Miller's Court with a man named Harry Owen.

I would be VERY grateful for any help in finding more information about Julia or her daughters.  I think Charlotte might have died in 1885.  One problem is that the surname is spelt in several different ways Venturney, Venteney....

With many thanks

London and Middlesex / Died in Shenley Hospital?
« on: Saturday 08 December 12 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
Help please - I am trying to find the death of William Henry Lancaster, born in 1874, and who apparently died "before 1950" in Shenley Hospital.  That is all the information that I have, unfortunately - I have tried FreeBMD and Ancestry, but no luck so far :(

From what I have found on internet, Shenley hospital was built in the 1930s.

Many thanks for any help

England / Adoption or name change in the late 19th century - any records?
« on: Friday 30 November 12 06:53 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning,

If someone changed his name, or was adopted, sometime between 1881 and 1902, would there be any record?

The person concerned - one of my great-uncles - was born (I think illegitimate) in 1874.  In the 1881 census he - Harry Johnson - still has his mother's surname, even though she married in 1875.  By the time of his marriage in 1902, he is using his step-father's surname and gives his complete name as William Henry Lancaster.

Would there have been some sort of "official act"?

I want to make completely sure that Harry and William Henry are indeed one and the same person..... I have a photo of Harry and on the back is written "Harry and Alice" - and Alice is the name of William's wife - so I am 99 percent sure!

Many thanks for any help

FH Documents and Artefacts / Dating two old "portrait plates"....
« on: Thursday 01 November 12 10:08 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning,

I hope it is OK for me to put these two pictures here.... they are not old photos, but two old "portrait plates".

My mother always told me that they belonged to her grandfather, so we are going back to the mid/late 1800s / early 1900s, but I wonder whether they might not be earlier...

There are no markings on the back, but would it be possible to date them from the portraits?  Also, would the two ladies have been anyone in particular - such as a family member, or just an "imaginary" lady?!!

Many thanks for any help

Good morning

I have just discovered the death of a great-aunt (Ada Millicent Clifford) at the above address in 1943. I cannot find anything on Google and would be grateful for any information..... I suppose that it was a nursing home?
With many thanks.

Good morning

I have just found an article that comes from an old pamphlet of the National Amalgamated Union of Life Assurance Workers, Fulham and West London Branch.

The article is about my Grandfather Christopher Lancaster, who was retiring "after 37 years of continuous service as their secretary", because of ill health.

I looked on internet, but cannot find very much about this organisation.  From what I read, I think that it doesn't exist any more, but I wondered whether there was any where or anyone that I could contact to find out more information about "Bro. Lancaster's" time with the union.  I do have loads of newspaper cuttings and articles about him, but am always looking out for more - maybe even speeches he made with the union, or other pamphlets in which he might be mentioned or have written articles.

Many thanks for any help or advice

Good morning

I have recently found two cards that were issued by Morden Cemetery giving the date of my Great Grandparents' burial, details as follows :

Alice Rix, died 28 December 1953, Grave N° 217 Section X.2
George William Rix, died 13th January 1951 (no grave given).

I sent an e-mail to the cemetery a couple of weeks ago, but - although I know they have had my message - I have had no reply. >:(

I am going to England at the end of next week and thought I might try and find time to go the cemetery - but as I will be in a bit of a hurry, I wanted to be sure that the graves are still there and there is something to see!

Could anyone tell me whether this is likely?

With many thanks

Tilly
