Worcestershire Lookup Requests / George Mole bc.1834 Worcester
« on: Monday 25 June 12 19:37 BST (UK)  »
This is a last ditch attempt to find the origins of George Mole.

I can find no baptism or any sighting of him on the census before he married in 1856 at Lambeth - he states his father as William Mole, an Engraver ( and can't find any trace of this William either).

His birthdate/birthplace on the census after marriage are:

1861 - 1834 City, Worcestershire
1871 - 1833 Farnal Green, Worcs.
1881 - 1834 Fernals Cath, Worcs.   (think last 2 entries should read Fernhill Heath which is 3 miles from Worcester)
1891 - 1834 Worcestershire
1901 - 1834 Worcestershire

In 1911 his name is given as George Morton Mole - born Worcester, Worcs.

Can anyone trace his baptism and any sighting of his father (or was he possibly illegitimate and William, engraver, a fabrication)?   Where was he in 1841/1851?

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Marriage at Norwich 1780
« on: Thursday 22 December 11 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
The new familysearch site shows that John Bullenthorpe and Susannah Mace were married 25/5/1780 Norwich, Norfolk.

How can I establish the source i.e. where in Norwich did this marriage take place?   All the events on this batch number simply state 'Norwich' - I would like to check the marriage details in case it should give any indication of where the respective couple came from (the Bullenthorpe's are one of my brickwalls and although I cynically doubt I'll get any leads I do need to check the marriage entry).

Hoping someone with more knowledge of Norfolk results on familysearch  may be able to help.

Essex Lookup Requests / German Groom Hart - Harwich, Essex
« on: Monday 17 May 10 23:49 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to do a look-up for a baptism in Harwich?   German Groom Hart was a Sailor born 1808-1811 and on the 1851 Census (when shown by name Groom) he states he was born at Harwich, Essex (although in 1861 it states Ipswich which is where he was living).   He died between 1861 and 1871.

As I can't trace him in Ipswich hope the 1851 Census is correct and that someone will be able to locate him in Harwich parish records.     It is just his baptism that I need.

Thank you.

The Common Room / Joseph Lister Will on Origins - COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 06 May 10 12:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Wonder if rootschatters can help me here.   I am a subscribed member of Origins - British Origins to be precise - but have a problem viewing census and wills.   They use alternatiff for viewing and you have to install plug-in from that site.   This I duly did and registered it as instructed but I am still unable to view because of my versions of Windows XP and IE6.   Following the help screen is not a lot of help - possible solutions given which keep stating 'do this at your risk' and I'm not going down that road!   I don't feel like shelling out £10 for a copy either as it's not my own family but of my nephew's wife.

So, are their any rootschatters who are also Origin members who could tell me the gist of what is in the will, specifically family details, as I am trying to determine which particular Joseph he is (father or son).

It's listed under Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York Probate Index 1731-1858 and the specific one I want is:

Joseph Lister       Ollerton      Nottinghamshire     1840 DEC

If anyone is able to help me I would be extremely grateful.

Other Countries / Kenya: Emigrated to Kenya 1951
« on: Saturday 02 May 09 17:50 BST (UK)  »
I am totally out of my comfort zone here.   Helping a friend and discovered one family line emigrated to Kenya in 1951.   She would like to know what became of them and whether any living family still there.   Have 'googled' but cannot find anything that helps - they don't even appear to have a phone book covering Kenya.

I know date of departure from London, ship, and that they were going to Kenya and disembarking at Mombasa.   They were Farmers.   I'm aware of the trouble which started the year after they arrived so maybe they didn't even stay there.   I only know they didn't return to the UK.

Do I just have to accept this is the end of the line regarding research in Kenya between 1951 and now?

Essex Lookup Requests / Great Clacton parish look-up
« on: Friday 12 September 08 13:37 BST (UK)  »
Hoping that someone may be able to check Great Clacton parish records for me.   (Why is Essex in general so poorly covered on the Internet???)

I've been given some information but with no sources cited and need to check:

Baptism of John Kerry bc.1820 Great Clacton - parents, etc.

I'm told that his parents are a James Kerry and wife Susanna and that other children are: Susanna bc.1810, James bc.1812, Lucy bc.1813, William bc.1814 and Thomas bc.1817 all born at Great Clacton.

James Kerry is said to have been born circa 1786 Great Clacton, together with siblings Susanna bc.1785, William bc.1790, Samuel bc.1795 and Mary bc.1797 and that parents are Ingram Kerry (bc.1770 Leigh on Sea) and  Rachel Ewell (bc.1771 Leigh on Sea) married 1794 Burnham on Crouch.   As you will see, dates etc. do not tie up and I am therefore suspicious of these last facts.)

If anyone is able to check the events in Great Clacton parish records I would be most grateful.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Desperation Point - Unpenetrable Brick Wall
« on: Friday 11 April 08 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to help my niece's partner with his family tree but have hit the proverbial brick wall far too soon.   Will list all the information I have.

James Wilder, 22, mariner, son of James Wilder, bootmaker (deceased) married Elizabeth Douglass in the register office at Newcastle upon Tyne on 330/7/1885.   The witnesses were Ralph Douglass (brides brother) and Thomas K. Munro.   (The Douglass line has proved no problem)

I believe he was just a lodger but don't have the exact address from my informant so have just e-mailed them for this.

I couldn't find him on the 1881 census but as he was a mariner wasn't too concerned as he may well have been at sea.   In 1891 (RG12 4185 92 17) the family were in Gateshead but he is shown as 'Joseph', age 26, and is a Coal Miner.   In 1901 (RG13 4760 138 28) the family are still in Gateshead and this time he is James, 28, and a bricklayers labourer.   On both census' he is shown as being born in Carlisle, Cumberland.   This, and his death, indicate a birth date of ca.1863.

Now the problems begin.   There is no birth entry (and I've checked original indexes as well as FreeBMD) for a James Wilder nor indeed any Wilder in Carlisle, or even in the whole of Cumberland.   Likewise, there are no marriages or deaths either!   The IGI shows a marriage some 25 years earlier but this is not shown in marriage index so maybe a mistake.    There are no Wilders living in the whole of Cumberland on any census and the ones that appear in Newcastle turned out to be Wilde's not Wilder.    Have checked Scottish records too since Carlisle is so close to the border but nothing there.   There was one family in Glasgow but they had their own James born later.

Whether a red herring or not I don't know but I've been told by the family that they think the family originated in Austria and may have anglicised their name (??)   Whether fact or something they've just picked up on I don't know.  Bearing that in mind have explored this angle too but nothing seems to fit.   In 1891 the Census shows a Lazarus Wilder bc.1866 in Brodz, Austria and in 1901 there's an Abraham Sam Wilder and family in Bradford and he was born Austria.   No trace of them before these dates in UK records.

There was no James Wilder, bootmaker on any census and no likely death between the younger James bc.1863 and 1885 when he married.   Have followed all the Wilder's listed in other parts of the country and no tie up with them.   In 1901 the census index shows a newly married Edward Wilder born in Carlisle who was in the Navy but having traced this line back this was clearly a mistake as he was actually born in Portsea and again no tie in with our mysterious James.

The witness Thomas K Munro has been searched for too in case a family connection there.   The only one I can find is a Thomas Kirkpatrick Munro bc.1866 in Arbroath, Angus who was a similar age to James Wilder but can find no family link between them.

So, we have a James Wilder supposedly born circa 1863 in Carlisle, Cumberland (son of another James Wilder, bootmaker who was deceased by 1885) - with a possible connection to Austria - of whom there is no trace prior to his marriage in 1885.   Is any of this information correct?   Have checked all kind of spelling variations but can find no trace of him anywhere.   Before I give up completely thought I'd run this by the clever folk on this site who seem to be able to break down other peoples brick walls.   Alas, the realist in me makes me far from optimistic.

The Common Room / Am I just too touchy?
« on: Friday 19 October 07 21:09 BST (UK)  »
Last night I spent at least an hour searching the Scottish census for someone (whom I won't name) who'd posted a message.   I was successful - noted the entries and then posted a reply.

Today I see a response - just one word 'Cheers'.   Having used up my time, using resources that I subscribe too for a 'Cheers' makes me so mad.   One things for sure - I won't help that person again.

I often help people if I can and have always received a suitable thank you which makes it worthwhile.    But a 'cheers'!   Am I just being oversensitive?

Scotland / Morn/e to Horn/e ?????
« on: Sunday 02 September 07 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Having finally broken down my Horn/e brickwall I now have a mystery - his father turns out to be a Bernard Morn/e who was bc.1830 Ireland (Leitrim or possibly Antrim) son of a Patrick.   In 1853 Bernard married Janet McKay at Linlithgow.   They had 4 children - James bc.1854 Bo'ness, Linlithgowshire(birth/baptism not found), Ann b.13/12/1855 Bo'ness, Jessie b.6/10/1858 Dalmeny and Mary b.1861 Cramond who died in 1861.

Bernard died in 1862 and in 1867 at Muiravonside his widow re-marries to a James Brown.   Took me a while to find the marriage because she gives her name as Janet McKay, widowed and not her married name of Morn/e.   On the 1871 Census son James is not with the family but was serving an apprenticeship as a Baker (he later became a Master Baker) and is shown as James Morne.   His sister Ann/Annie is a servant in Falkirk, again listed as Morne.   Sister Jessie is with the Brown family and recorded as Brown!

Around mid 1870's the Morn/e's suddenly become Horn/e!!   James and his 2 sisters marry as Horn/e and this information is also on their death certificates.   All trace of Bernard Morn/e seems to have been eradicated.   His wife didn't even re-marry with his name, his children change their surname to Horn/e and not one of his 3 children named a child after him.    It was if he never existed.   Added to that only dau. Jessie named Bernard as her father, albit as Horn, but by the time all 3 died their father  is given as a James Horn/e, farmer!

What on earth could have happened to cause this?   Was there some scandal concerning a Morn/e or even Bernard himself?   One gets used to seeing surnames spelt incorrectly, albeit sounding the same, and can appreciate that M and H can be incorrectly transcribed but Morn/e and Horn/e have 2 distinct sounds.   I've followed the lines of James Horne's 2 sisters and know I have the right people - this has revealed relatives that my mother remembered and who hitherto I had been unable to find.

Can anyone offer any ideas as to why this scenario could have happend?
