Thanks Stan,

Had actually seen that site, but thanks.

I'm struggling a bit to identify which pits would have been the workplaces for men from Rhymney. Rhymney Merthyr, I suppose! I know that my g-grandfather worked at Bargoed, which is further than I would have expected. Would workers have been transported to the mine by rail?

There's no one left in my family who was a miner. My father and his brothers were persuaded by their father to go nowhere near the pits!

Monmouthshire / issing marriages - Iowerth Davies, Rhymney

Struggling to find my ancestors marriages

I have found Iorwerth Davies (or Jorwerth!) on the 1871 - 1901 censii. He is the father of my g-grandad. He has two wives, and I'm struggling to locate his marriages on the index.

I have been looking for either Iowerth (or alternate spelling) or Edward as I understand that this is an anglicisation of the name.

On 1871 he appears with wife Sarah and children at 26 High St, Rhymney. The eldest child is 9.

On 1881 he appears with wife Mary and children at the same address. The children have ages about 2 years apart and there's no obvious gap where he was single.

I've looked under Bedwellty, Crickhowell and Abergavenny and I'm not having a lot of luck.

I think I may have found a death for Sarah in Bedwellty in 1880.

Can anyone help please?

Eternally grateful ... Dallashandra xx

Can anyone tell me how I can find out where my ancestors worked? Or at least a list of pits in the area they lived to start from?

I have a number of miners living in the Welsh village of Rhymney, MON, and would like to find further information about their work.

Thanks

Monmouthshire / Mining ancestors in Rhymney

What's the best way of finding out where my ancestors worked?

I have quite a few branches of my family who were miners in the Rhymney area throughout the 19th century. Does anyone have any information (or clues as to where I can find it!) on the mines in this area?

Thanks

Monmouthshire / George Davies b. 1910 Poss. Rhymney, MON

Hi,

Having a bit of trouble getting started on this particularly knotty branch of my family tree...

My grandfather, George Davies was born on 16 Feb 1910. His father's name was also George Davies. Family legend has it that he was born in Rhymney, but can't find a suitable birth on the indexes. My father remembers an uncle John, and Aunts Harriet and Mari, but I don't know any dates of birth and there's always the possibility that he's got confused!

George married Morfydd Rees on 4 Aug 1934, the certificate is where I got the fathers name from. His address before marriage is Lady Tyler Terrace, Rhymney.

Can't work out where to go from here ... is my only option to wait til 2012 for the 1911 census??

Thanks for any help anyone can give me!
