Family History Beginners Board / WANTED: Tracing relatives help
« on: Friday 07 October 05 04:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've been away for a while after taking a break.  I had so many names, dates and places flying around my head I couldn't think.

I was wondering whether anyone knows of anyone who offers services to help look for relatives for other people who either don't have the time themselves or really have become stuck and are unable to find any more information.

I thought I'd ask on here rather than Googling because I don't want to pay someone only to find I've wasted money because they're not that good.  Its a kind of find someone by word of mouth thing.

Many thanks.

The Lighter Side / Just found a living relative
« on: Friday 15 October 04 21:37 BST (UK)  »
I logged into GenesConnected and while trawling through my family names and dates, sent about 30 messages.

I had a load of "no"s but about an hour ago received a message from a living relative who's now in Canada.

I'm sooooo excited!

The Lighter Side / What a treasure find!

I printed a mini-tree of the research I'd discovered so far and went to mother's yesterday and showed her what I've done.  For my brother (the eldest of us) it was the first time he's seen anything and was amazed when he told me he had "some photos and letters" which belonged to our grandmother.

When I saw exactly what it was he had my jaw hit the deck.  There were stacks of photos, love letters between my grandmother and grandfather, newspaper clippings and much more.  There was also a small "autograph book" which dates back to the early 1920s which was used to get autographs from family members and friends - it amazed me how many people left "naughty" little messages.  I've been allowed to bring the collection home in parts to scan and photograph to preserve them in digital format for the family tree.

Here's one photo of what I've brought home so far...

Large pic bottom right: my great grandmother, Ada Harris
Small pic above it on right: my grandmother, Constance Woodcock (about 14yrs)
Small pic next to my grandmother: my gggrandgather, James Harris (Welsh, standing)

Here's a close-up of the inside of the photograph wallets...

Lastly, a photo of who I think is my gggrandfather...

I tried a Google search for the photographer to see if they're still running but can't find anything.

I've linked to a site because of the size of them.  These are straight from my camera - no editing.

Without FreeBMD I wouldn't have about 90% of the information on my family tree that I have now so seeing that I've got a lot of spare time due to being out of work I decided it was about time I did my bit to put something back and signed up as a volunteer to transcribe for FreeBMD.

If anyone else wants to sign up the link is http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/Signup.html

Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / 1841/1851, HARRIS
« on: Tuesday 12 October 04 03:09 BST (UK)  »
George Latham HARRIS married Rhoda (surname unknown) and had their first child, George, about 1856.

Went on to have another 5 children, Fanny, Morgan, James, Emily and Arthur.

Sometime between 1960 and 1962 they moved to London.

William Woodcock (b.abt1845)
Emma Kesia/Kezia Derrick (b.abt1854)

Both born in Birmingham and later got married to each I think around September 1876 in Solihull, Birmingham.

I would be ecstatic if they could be found in either or all of the census records for 1851, 1861 and 1871 so I could see the rest of their families.

Completed Census Requests / 1871, 1881, HARRIS (pretty please) Pembrokeshire
« on: Monday 06 September 04 21:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm not too sure about this.

My ggrandfather on my grandmother's side aparrently was born at Pembrokeshire (abt1862), I think Castlemartin and at some time moved to London where he married Ada around 1890.

He's one of the few people in my tree who I don't have any information for other than his name, year of birth & marriage/new family.

Anyone able to offer some help?  I've searched for ages looking for a free copy of the 1871 Census for Wales and can't find anything - everything seems to link to Ancestry.com somewhere!
