« on: Friday 15 July 16 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Old Monkland Churchyard Lair Owners in 1881.
Originally compiled March 1881 by Alexander McGregor Mitchell, architect, at the request of the Old Monkland heritors and with information supplied principally by William Russell, sexton of the churchyard for “seventeen years past”, an office previously held by his father and grandfather before him for a period of eighty-three years.
This list must have been added to afterwards as there is a date of 1895 against one of the names.

Lanarkshire / LAMINGTON CHURCHYARD Photographs & Monumental Inscriptions
« on: Tuesday 03 June 14 12:20 BST (UK)  »
I photographed about one-third of the stones in this burial ground, it was a cold afternoon in April (2014) and I will try to go back and take more pictures. I found 2 interesting stones, one is the Robb & Ritchie stone as it mentions their son who perished on the "Forfarshire". This was the shipwreck made famous by Grace Darling. The other stone is a huge monument erected by the Rev Charles Hope in memory of his wife Barbara Affleck. There is a mention to Eugenie, Empress of the French. Have a look at the photograph, you will see that Mrs Hope's mother is mentioned as "Mrs" Janet Fraser - her maiden surname, she was the wife of John Affleck. good proof that Scottish women were known by their maiden surnames but with the married prefix. See the pictures after the list of names. As usual, if you require a picture just send me your email address by PM.

Culter Parish churchyard in South Lanarkshire, photographs taken April 2014. I have added the earliest decipherable date on the stone after the surnames. On a few occasions I had to refer to Sheila Scott's "Upper Ward of Lanarkshire Monumental Inscriptions" to figure out a few of the names. It is a beautiful area and worth a visit. Most of the stones are in excellent condition.

Peeblesshire / Kilbucho Church
« on: Friday 09 May 14 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if the ruins of Kilbucho Parish church still stand? Would there be a burial ground there?
I am researching the Sinclair family from Culter (Legholmshiels farm) and one of the births was registered in both Culter and Kilbucho OPRs in 1785. The mother's name was Carrick and I wondered if perhaps her family came from Kilbucho. The child was Mungo Sinclair and I suspect his maternal grandfather may have been Mungo Carrick.
I have found a lovely tombstone in Culter churchyard for the Sinclair family.

Argyllshire / Barbara Campbell of Islay
« on: Saturday 29 March 14 21:34 GMT (UK)  »
On a recent visit to Paris I found this interesting gravestone in Picpus cemetery. Only family (including spouses and in-laws) of those nobles guillotined in 1794 and who were buried in this small, private cemetery are allowed burial there. This is the family of the Count of Polignac.

Barbara Campbell Countess of Polignac born on the island of Islay, Scotland 12th July 1788, died at St Mande 23rd May 1849.

I have no connection to this family but perhaps she belongs to some RC member?
