Lanarkshire / Margaret Hardie (mmn Laurie)
« on: Friday 29 December 23 12:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

We are researching the Hardie family of Coatbridge Glasgow: Thomas Muir Hardie (1880-1940); Margaret Hardie (mn Laurie) (1880-1959); and their children Thomas M (1901), John L (1903), George (1905), James (1908), Agnes M (1909), and Helen (1911).  There is also an adopted daughter Margaret Hardie Martin (1900).

We can see Thomas on the 1921 census in Coatbridge, a married man, with his sons but there is no sign of his wife Margaret or their daughters.  Can anyone spot where they are in 1921, in particular Helen?

Hi

I am trying to locate the marriage of Thomas Bassett and Elizabeth, who were having children in Hinckley from 1794.  It does not appear that this family were those that married in Grendon in 1792, as that family had several children in Polesworth from 1792, which was at the same time as the children who were being baptised to a Thomas and Elizabeth in Hinckley, suggesting two families.

I am thinking that the Hinckley Thomas Bassett may have been born in Great Claybrooke, Leicestershire in 1767 to Richard and Ann.  However I still cannot see another marriage that may tie to the Hinckley couple.

Can anybody help?

Staffordshire / Spendilow - Stoke On Trent
« on: Friday 03 March 23 00:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find out the parents of William Spendilow (as listed in the 1911 census) born abt 1891 in Ashton Under Lyme.  I think he may actually be Frederick William Spendilow - son of Frederick and Emma Spendilow.  They married in 1888, Emma having a maiden name of Wright and being a spinster who lists her father as William Wright.  Frederick William Spendilow’s birth also had a mother’s maiden name of Wright in 1891.

In 1911 he is living in the household of Frank and Rosetta Bailey at 46 Corporation Street, Stoke on Trent along with, I presume, Rosetta’s mother -  Rosetta Thompson.  He is listed as Nephew, so presumably Rosetta (formerly Thompson) is his aunt and Rosetta senior is his grandmother.

I am struggling to link him to the ‘Thompson’ family though, as his mother appears to be a ‘Wright’ rather than a ‘Thompson’.  Can anybody help me find out his family - in particular his mother’s family?

Hoping someone can help clarify.

Thanks

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Ann Gale - born abt 1810 Calne
« on: Monday 13 February 23 20:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to establish the family of Ann Gale who married James Shepard in Devizes in 1831.

Ann states she is born in Calne. I have found a baptism for an Ann Gale in 1813 to a William and Sarah Gale, of Calne, with William stated as a carpenter.

This baptism is a possibility, as I can find no other likely candidate parents.  However, I cannot find any further info on these potential parents, including census records, other children, or marriage details to provide further pointers.

Can anyone help find further details/documentary evidence, or offer a better fit?

Any help to progress this line appreciated!

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Jane Hyatt - born abt 1832 Longton Staffordshire
« on: Thursday 09 February 23 18:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone spot a baptism and family for Jane Hyatt.  Jane married Thomas Spendilow in Stoke On Trent in 1852, listing a father as William Hyatt a Collier.

I think i see her in 1851 as a servant aged 19 in Longton, Staffs; and in 1841 she seems to be aged 7 and living with Samuel and Elizabeth Lear (Leas?) in Longton, Staffs.

I cannot determine her parents/family or what happened to them.  Can anyone please help?

Thanks

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Sheppard Family - 1841 - Devizes/Market Lavington/Easterton
« on: Thursday 09 February 23 18:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone spot the 1841 census for the Sheppard family in 1841.

The family comprise:

James Sheppard - born circa 1776 in Clatford, Wilts - a Hawker
Ann Sheppard - born circa 1813 in Calne, Wilts
Elizabeth Sheppard - born circa 1831 in Devizes, Wilts
Catherine Sheppard - born circa 1834 in Devizes, Wilts
Joseph Sheppard - born circa 1836 in Devizes, Wilts
John Sheppard - born circa 1839 in Devizes, Wilts

In 1851 and 1861 the family are in Easterton, Wiltshire.

Hopefully someone will spot it.

Thanks

Shropshire / William Thompson - born abt 1837 in Ironbridge area
« on: Wednesday 08 February 23 22:59 GMT (UK)  »
Evening

I wonder if anyone can help me locate parents for William Thompson.

The first i find of William is when he marries Rosetta Stretch in 1858 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.  On his marriage certificate he is of full age and a boatman.  He lists his father as Isaac Thompson a saw maker.

In the census', William (and Rosetta) are:

1861 - living in Wolverhampton, (under Tompson) as visitors  in the Johnstone household; William is aged 23 (so born abt 1837/38; still a boatman; and states that he is born in Shropshire.
1871 - living in Stoke On Trent; as a Wharf Waggoner; aged abt 30 (so born abt 1840/41); and states born Madeley, Shropshire.
1881 - living in Coventry; aged 42 (so born abt 1838/39); a licensced Victualler and Boatman; and born Ironbridge, Shropshire.
1891 - living in Stoke On Trent; aged 54 (so born about 1836/37); a Boatman - canal barge; and again born in Ironbridge, Shropshire.
1901 - living in Stoke on Trent; aged 62 (so born abt 1838/39); a Boatman - barge; and again born Ironbridge, Shropshire.

William dies in 1906 in Stoke On Trent region, aged 69 (so born abt 1837).

I cannot locate William in 1841 or 1851 census; and i cannot locate a suitable baptism.  I have found a baptism in 1844 in Wellington Shropshire of a William Thompson to an Isaac and Ann, but that seems very late (particularly as he married in 1858) and also the baptisms of that wider family group sit around that date.

Can anybody help me find William and his family?

Thanks

Monmouthshire / Elizabeth Williams - born abt 1850-52 in Chepstow
« on: Thursday 19 January 23 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am currently researching a couple - Robert Sheppard (Shepherd etc) and Elizabeth Williams.  They got married in Tidenham in 1870 and had at least 13 children thereafter in Chepstow or Barry Island.

They put their fathers down as Charles Sheppard and William Williams on the marriage entry.

I have established that Robert was actually the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Williams, born in Easterton in 1852, with his mother getting married to Charles Burden in Market Lavington in 1854. DNA matches to half siblings confirm this.

Elizabeth states she was born in Chepstow abt 1850-52, with the only potential clue being a fathers name of William on the marriage entry.

But I cannot find Elizabeth or her parents on the census’ before her marriage to Robert in 1870, nor can I be sure who I’m looking for! Can anybody please help?

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Marriage - Harriet Dakin and William Davis
« on: Wednesday 06 July 22 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Has anyone got access to Basford marriage records?

I am trying to establish the father and his trade of William Davis who married Harriet Dakin (both widows/er) on 23rd October 1882 at St Leodegarius, Basford, Nottingham.

It’s such a common name I am struggling to find who his parents were.  William David was previously married to Sarah Murden, who died in 1878.  They were living in Bilborough in 1871.

Thanks
