Lancashire Lookup Offers / Re: Ford & Yew Tree Cemetery Records
« on: Wednesday 17 April 24 21:33 BST (UK)  »
Have had a look and there is (unusually) no indication of a section number in the available database.

Marienne may be able to check, but the lack of a section number and evidence of other burials at the same time in the same grave number does indicate this was a public grave and therefore its extremely unlikely to be marked with a headstone.

Dear All,

In Ford Cemetery I have a grave listed as 272, but I notice a lot of entries state 272. Is this a communal grave? The person in question is listed as 19 months in Sept 1911

Thank you

Hi

If you give us a name we can check  the burials register to see which section this person was buried in. From what you have said its quite possible this was a public grave where the rights to burial were not purchased so there will be no headstone but if we can look and see what the section was then that would enable Marienne to check the graves registers to confirm that.

This looks quite possible to be the burial record you are looking for?

Says the cemeteries dept will search for you - at a cost of £64 .

Though if you are near enough for a visit to Birkenhead Central Library  it seems they have the burial records on microfilm

There's a George William Lofas in the following census returns:
1901 Sculcoates, Yorkshire
1911 Bilton, Skirlaugh, Yorkshire
1921 Preston, Sculcoates, Yorkshire

Looks like G W and the surname seems to be L [o/a] f [a/e] s

the full image would be helpful to see the rest of the writing to compare.
What date? whose brother in law was he ? that would help to find other records which may be written more clearly

Scotland / Re: Statutory Marriage Registration c1870s, Scotland

This all started me thinking when I read that it was rare for events NOT to be in the Statutory Registers post 1855.

I don't know who should have had the legal responsibility to ensure that was the case, which is why I asked about it.
The quote you gave appears to say:

not anyone official, not priest/vicar/ minister/ government employee/registrar, just the couple involved and they could be fined if they don't comply.
Seems a bit lopsided to me.

So, in essence 'compulsory' registration could be viewed, in fact, as optional :-)
Not the best thought out piece of legislation!
