Australia / Did Charles stay in Oz?
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 15:38 BST (UK)  »
I have Charles E Paull b Sept 1/4 of 1924 in Southwark London.
On 3 Jun 1947 he left London bound for Melbourne on the ship called The Orion.
He was 22 and a sheet metal worker. Then we lose him.

There is a Charles E Paull in the electoral rolls in Victoria as an engineer, but I'm not convinced that he's my chap. His parents are Thomas Alfred Paull and Florence Annie Paull (nee Thomas).

Can anyone with knowledge of what records can be accessed in Australia please help.

Did he marry, die out there, come home........???

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

The Common Room / Opinions please
« on: Friday 22 August 14 08:52 BST (UK)  »
These twins births are really bugging me.

If they were twins you’d expect the numbers to be consecutive  not 9 apart.
You can’t tell me that they registered Annie and then 8 more people came in to register their babies before the clerk got round to completing the forms for William?
Okay their deaths were 3 apart numbers 182 and 185,but of course they didn’t neccesarily die at the same time.

And as they were in the same 1/4 could the deaths have been recorded before the births???

Births Sep 1916

Barleycorn  Annie  mmn O'Brien  W.Ham  4a 562
Barleycorn  William  mmn O'Brien  W.Ham  4a 573

Deaths Sep 1916
Barleycorn    Annie    0    W.Ham    4a   182
Barleycorn    William    0    W.Ham    4a   185

What does anyone else think...........apart from that we have no idea who their parents were.
I know we could buy one of the certs, but my friend (whose family this is) is doing a one name study and it can work out very expensive  ;D

Australia / Can anyone find Walter?
« on: Friday 18 July 14 23:21 BST (UK)  »
I have Walter Barleycorn born in Clapham Surrey (London) in 1829.
His parents are John and Elizabeth.

I can find him on the 1841 and 51 censuses with his family, but never again in England.

He next turns up in NSW in 1852 - on a list of unclaimed post.
Then on an alphabetical government list as number 14 in Beechworth Victoria in 1857.

And after that nothing. Can anyone find him again please, marriage, death, passage back to England.......anything  ;D

It's such an unusual combination of names I have no doubt that it's the same chap.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Cork / Buttevant burials
« on: Wednesday 16 July 14 14:19 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the burial place of an Owen Russell who died on 6th March 1894 at Knockburry? Buttevant. He was 64. I am keen to find if his wife Mary was buried with him,or any other family member. There are a number of possible Mary Russell deaths that could be her,she was still alive when he died.

Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Which beach is this?
« on: Thursday 01 May 14 09:13 BST (UK)  »
The picture is of my dad aged about 7, c1930 and his parents on a beach on the south coast.
It is a traditional seaside postcard, which has the photographers Sunbeam Photo Ltd and a Margate address on the back.

Does anyone recognise the beach? No not the sand  ;D but maybe the metal/wooden stairs in the background?

I had a copy of this photo for many years,I have just been sent the original when an elderley relative had a clear out.Wonderful stuff!!!

Many thanks

Canada Lookup Request / Frank Herbert Wright
« on: Friday 04 April 14 16:29 BST (UK)  »
There is a 51 year old English born Frank Herbert Wright on the 1921 census in 769 Cambri district of Vancouver. His wife is listed as Frank Ida Wight (and it does look like that  ;D) He is supposed to have been in Canada since 1889,and his wife is American.

I am having no luck finding him before or after that date- can anyone help please.

The one I am trying to find was born in Kentish Town London in 1870 and appears on the 1871 and 81 UK census and then vanishes. The chap turning up in Canada looks a good bet,but I can't see him again.

I've tried the BC death and marriage indexes and had no luck either.

Many thanks

Technical Help / Windows Live Mail
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have just had to upgrade from an XP computer to a Windows 7 and consequently can no longer use my old friend ,Outlook Express. I have been forced to have Windows Live Mail  >:(

I am having trouble with so many aspects of it (not very computer literate) but my biggest problem is that it isn't saving any Sent emails, despite the box being ticked to say that it should be.

Help please  ;D

I'll no doubt have more questions later on  ;)

Thanks

Carol

PS I don't like the way that I can't put this new machine into hibernate or standby as I could with the old one.
