Technical Help / Why can't I stayed logged in?
« on: Wednesday 16 November 16 11:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am on Windows 7 and use Firefox.

2 days ago my computer suddenly shut down (as if we'd had a power cut) but came straight back on.
I was no longer logged in to any website (Rootschat,Twitter,Yahoo Mail,Facebook and Ancestry to name a few).

Using Firefox and trying the tools...options....privacy settings ,I still can't get it to remain logged in as before. On Twitter, every time I log back in it sends me an email to ask if it was me!

It is remembering my passwords but not remembering to keep me logged in.

I am fed up with it so have migrated to Google Chrome for a while, that does allow me to stay logged in,but I don't like it as much as Firefox.

Suggestions please....I am not very computer literate and am terrified that I'll change something and won't be able to get it back as it was.So please explain in simple terms  ;D

Thanks Carol

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 register- 5 million new records unlocked.
« on: Tuesday 15 November 16 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
Have just noticed this on Find My Past....

"  Thanks to the work of the 1939 Register team, we've been able to successfully match and open over 5 million more records that were previously closed, and they're all available to explore right now. If you have tried unsuccessfully to find a family member in the Register who died after 1991, there's a very good chance you'll be able to now.

Findmypast is the only place online that gives you access to the 1939 Register, which is a responsibility we take very seriously. Accordingly, we've been working away behind the scenes to give you access to as many individual entries as possible.

As we've mentioned in the past, data protection law prevents us from opening the record of anyone younger than 100 years and a day and still alive. As the Register ceased to be updated in 1991, this meant a number of the records of people who have since died were closed, when legally they could be open. In addition, many deaths were never recorded in the Register, possibly due to the individual dying abroad or a number of other reasons. The records of these people would also be closed.

In order to open these records and give access to our users, we've cross-referenced the 1939 Register with the General Register Office's England and Wales civil registration death indexes, 1969-2006. Since this record set gives dates of birth, we can match individual deaths, where they are recorded, to the people in the 1939 Register, meaning we can now open these records. We took the decision to do this matching after we had launched so that both Findmypast and TNA were confident that the process was 100% accurate.

We're cross-referencing further records on an ongoing basis, and will have more open soon.

In addition, we're opening the records of those who pass the 100 years and a day threshold on a weekly basis, at a rate of around 30,000 per month. We'll be opening more records every week, so check back often! "

Technical Help / Intel Graphics-I've really done it now!
« on: Friday 29 July 16 10:49 BST (UK)  »
All day yesterday Windows update was trying to update Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) HD Graphics, but failing. Everytime I turned my computer (Windows 7) off it asked me to shut down, but it couldn't install it.

This morning it was still doing the same thing,so I thought it might be that I had an out of date Intel Graphics programme and thought I could 'repair' it.
Well it uninstalled it completely and now my computer has gone all funny/fuzzy like it's in safe mode with massive wonky writing.

Please can anyone help me,and in simple language please,as you can probably tell I don't understand much about computers!

Thank you

Carol

World War One / WW1 German Iron Cross recipients
« on: Friday 15 January 16 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
I am helping a friend with his family history,he has a German ancestor Eric(h) J F Rubinstein, who was born in Berlin c 1892.He fought for Germany in WW1 and apparently won an Iron Cross medal.

He then married had one child in Germany and came over to the UK in early 1950's 1930's and fought for us in WW2(maybe as a spy?) he also had 2 more daughters here too.

Are there any records showing Iron Cross holders in WW1 please?

Many thanks

The story of how we got Diane and her half brother John together, is to be featured on BBC on Family Finders at 11-30am on Tuesday 23rd June.

They asked if a few of us would go on there and speak ,Marg did,but I preferred not to,but they promise to mention those who helped and to sing the praises of Rootschat as a whole.

Hope it turns out okay!

Carol
