Hi Everyone

I am also a Biggins (at least my mother was).  We are aware of an Irish connection  but have been unable to get past our brickwall.   I have previously asked for help on here but have found nothing.  Here is post explaining:

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Re: Lydia Jones, canal boat worker
« on: Friday 05 April 24 12:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Can I add my twopenneth?  - I'm from a canal boat line too.

Firstly, many boatmen worked in the mines before they went on the canals.   The families would know each other - the canals hauled coal up and down the country.

Some families had a house as a base but others lived on the boat - crammed into the small living area as space on the boats was given up to the load they carried.   Children were born on the boats others perhaps in the house of a relative en route.

Check for births along the routes of the canals - the Grand Union  went from the Midlands down to London (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Union_Canal).   Birmingham, Dudley and Tipton were major centres.  The Llangollen joins Wales to England  - possibilities endless.  My grandmother was born in Birmingham and had a sister born in Watford.

Good luck!

The Common Room / Genomelink - what do you think?
« on: Sunday 24 December 23 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I've seen several adverts for the above recently.  All claiming to give more info than other sites.

I was wondering if anyone has used it, is it worth the effort, does it supply anything extra ?  Do they ask for bank details first?

I'd appreciate any comments / help

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Bagshaw Wood,Sheffield

Hi
I think Bagshaw Wood could've well been in the Norton area of Sheffield.  I've lived in the area most of my life and haven't heard of these woods.
However, there is a pub built circa 1770 called the Bagshaw Arms (they do excellent food!) - address 'Norton Avenue Norton Sheffield S14 1BP'. It has an entry on Historic England.   It is also shown on a map I found on the Geneaologist - I think around 1840s.

https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1246794?section=official-list-entry

The area around Norton is green and wooded and is near to Graves Park which is famous in the area.  Its a fair walk to Beauchief but back in the day they probably thought it wasn't.

Sheffield Libraries have an excellent archive - they may be able to help.

With acknowledgement to Picture Sheffield here's a photo of the pub.

Thank you for your replies.   I hadn't seen the report re Charlottes 'offence'.   Does it say what she had done to justify this punishment?  I had wondered if the  marriage had failed and Rodon left but you are right - the workhouse would want paying.

Incidentally, I noticed that one of their children, Joseph 26, was also in the workhouse on the 1871 census.  He his shown as being a basketmaker and was deaf, dumb and blind. Such a dreadful shame for these people.  They didn't stand a chance.

I wonder if Rawden was deceased by 1871 as surely he would have kept Joseph at home.   Looking at hanes teulu's find he was still with us in 1866.

Thank you again for your efforts
Ginger

Yes 1861 - last one for Charlotte was 1871 when she was in the workhouse in Sheffield

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Rawden (Rodon) Hague b 1823
« on: Friday 18 August 23 19:39 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the record of a death and/or burial for Rawden Hague.   His name is sometimes shown as Rodon.   He was born 5th August 1823 and baptised Rawden (parents Richards and Sarah) on 31st August 1823 in Swinton, Yorkshire.  His wife Charlotte was from the Manchester area where they were married.  Charlotte along with some of their children was deaf and dumb.   She died in the workhouse in Sheffield in 1880 and was buried in a public grave in the General Cemetery, Sheffield.   The couple had lived on Sorby Street, Sheffield and Rawden was a file cutter.  I am aware that there were extended family (Hagues)  in the Wath on Dearne area.
I am unable to find any trace of a death and burial for Rawden or even if he survived Charlotte and remarried.  I wondered if anyone could help.
Many thanks
