London and Middlesex / Re: Plumstead Hight Street School in WW2

There is a book "Red Alert, South east london 1939-1945" by Lewis Blake.  I should be available from a library.  It mentions the school which was damaged by fire 16 April 1941 when the area was heavily bombed.  Crystal Palace was badly damaged.  No pictures of the school.

Most schools were still used.  Children were evacuated but a lot returned to London so the school would still be needed.

Just read this http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/18/a2043118.shtml  The school was set up as a rest centre

I'm looking for Henry Holgate b 1799 Downham, Lancs?  He is probably living in Grindleton or Sawley.  He died in 1857.

Would also like to find his son Joseph Holgate.  I believe he is living at Green Head, Sawley

thabk you for your help

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Family tree on Ancestry
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 10:41 BST (UK)  »
I must warn AGAIN about trees on Ancestry.

My tree was put on by someone else with mistakes.  A couple of years later I looked at Ancestry trees and found my ancestor who had died in 1851 was resurrected in USA and had another wife and family.  A miracle family

Just be careful when looking at other peoples trees.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: SHADWELL
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 10:13 BST (UK)  »
You could try this site http://www.parishregister.com/searchpage.asp  There are a few lists which go up to 1900s.  The one at Wapping, which is next to Shadwell could be worth a look at.  In fact it is worth looking at all those within the date period as people did move around but may have stuck to a church for baptisms.

St George in the East and St Dunstans were popular churches for the area

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Wigan Parish Records Look-up.

Most of the churches in Ince were not there in 1830 which is why the records have not been transcribed.  It would be best to look at other Wigan churches.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Help tracing William Archer
« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 10:54 BST (UK)  »
The marriage of William Archer and Ann White is on the IGI http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp  as are the baptisms of the children.  You may find more children here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm.  You could try for Williams birth on the IGI but unfortunately it does not seem to cover 1785 at St James Westminster
