Europe / Re: GREECE: Research in Greece

Hi Dave,

Research in Greece can be difficult, first off it is important that you have the full Greek name of the person in question, an anglicized version of the name will not be recognized as it is not the name the person was originally registered under.

Then you will need the place of birth of the person as there is no central repository for BDMs in Greece. All records are held by the municipal or local councils for each particular area.

You will also need the name of the parents, because of the Greek naming tradition there will be many relatives in the area with the same first name and a fathers name is always used as a differentiation.

And lastly whatever records are retrieved will be in Greek, unfortunately they will not translate the records into English. If you have a Greek Orthodox church nearby you will probably find that the local Priest or someone in the parish will be willing to translate for you.

Hope this helps
TG
