Hi Helen
Ady is correct it was the 1st Battalion. The only other regular battalion was in India at the time. The 10th (Liverpool Scottish) battalion were one of the first territorial battalions to go overseas. They went to France in November 1914. All other battalions went during 1915.
The First Battalion left Talavera Barracks, Aldershot at 6am on the 12th of August 1914. Their strength was 27 Officers and 991 Other Ranks. They left Farnborough station at 8am and arrived at Southampton Docks at 9.30. They sailed on the SS Irrawaddy about noon with the 2nd South Staffs regiment. And reached Le Havre the next day.
They were allocated to the 2nd Division. If you follow this link -
http://www.1914-1918.net/kings.htm - and click on 2nd Division you will get a time line of their involvement.
The information about the 1st Bn comes from the book by Everard Wyrall. Also, note that the qualifying date is the date he left England, not the date he arrived ‘in theatre’.
