« on: Tuesday 06 November 07 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there
I'd be very grateful to anyone who may have a transcription of an MI for Elizabeth GARCIA, died September 1881 and buried at St Kilda Cemetery, Melbourne.
Kind regards

Hi suffolk*sue
A breakthrough in Australia with the help of another RootsChatter.  Elizabeth Garcia died in Melbourne in 1881.  Her husband was Miguel GARCIA and son was Miguel Paschal GARCIA (he who was apparently born in Shadwell 1835/36).  Her maiden name appears to have been GRAHAM.
This is really great progress and thanks to all concerned.  Elizabeth was buried by a Minister from the Methodist Free Church.  Do you know of any such churches that would have been around near Shadwell in 1835/36 and where I could access possible christening or birth records of Miguel Paschal GARCIA.
You are all so very helpful and every bit of news thrills our family.
Kind regards

Australia / Re: James Garcia birth Richmond VIC 1876-78

Hi Sparrett
I really do appreciate your local knowledge of Richmond and the links to the images you sent.  Cando has helped me locate the death certificate of my great-great-grandmother Elizabeth Garcia who died at Brougham St in 1881.  She was buried by a Minister Dawe (looks like) of Methodist Free Church and was buried at St Kilda cemetery.  Is there a Methodist Free Church in or near Richmond (or was there in 1876-78) where I could locate records of the birth or christening of James GARCIA - 13 January 1876 is the most likely date, so that might also help locate a baby who was adopted near that time, although I'm thinking less now that James was adopted.
Cando has achieved a real breakthrough for our family.  Now if we could just find the James GARCIA link.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

Many thanks Cando

GARCIA is certainly a popular Spanish name, but unusual enough in Australia and New Zealand in the 19th century to make searching quite easy - if the right names are there.  The name has been misspelt in Directories as Gracier and Gacia, and no doubt there are other variants.

This family line is a bit of a mystery, especially with the mention of adoptions.  But the fact that family oral history had knowledge of Stanley GARCIA being adopted and possibly reverting to his birth name WHITE, while there has never been a suggestion in the family that James GARCIA was adopted might still suggest James is the biological son of Mary and Miguel (John) GARCIA.

Could some birth records at that time have been destroyed?  Would Church records provide some help perhaps?  Does anyone know if Yarra State School records are available or whether adoption records would have been available at that time in the 1870s/1880s and how I might access them?

The family seems to have been in the wake of the gold rushes - in Otago late 1860s, in Victoria in the 1870/80s and Thames, NZ, in the 1890s, so there might be some material there.

Thanks again for such a quick response.

Australia / James GARCIA birth Richmond VIC 1876-78

Hi there
None of my family have been able to find details of my grandfather's birth or christening in Melbourne despite visits and searches of commonly available records there and in NZ.  We believe James GARCIA was born on 13 January 1876 (NZ school admission record, although anytime 1875 to 1878 is possible) in Richmond, Melbourne (Cyclopaedia of NZ) or at least Melbourne (death certificate).  His parents were Miguel Paschal GARCIA (sometimes known as John GARCIA, emigrated from London) and Mary Jane GARCIA (nee AMY, emigrated from Jersey, likely of Presbyterian faith).
The Garcia family lived in Richmond (Charlotte St, Rowena Parade, Brougham St) from 1876 to about 1887 (Directories).  James’s early education was at Yarra Park State School in Melbourne.  The family also had a son named Stanley GARCIA, born on 14 or 16 August 1882 (NZ school record, probably in Melbourne) who we believe was adopted.  Possibility, therefore, that James GARCIA was also adopted, which could explain why we are unable to find his birth record.  The birth details of James GARCIA are an important link for our family as a GARCIA family reunion looms in January in New Zealand.  We would be grateful for any help to find James GARCIA's birth details or other Australian information on this GARCIA family.  Kind regards.

Thanks suffolk*sue.  I guess that would mean her maiden name is unlikely to be Spanish?  As soon as I get the maiden name I'll be searching birth and marriage records in Gibraltar.
The Garcia side of our family has always been a bit of a mystery.  My grandfather James Garcia was apparently born in Melbourne about 1877 but we've never found a birth record there.  His father Miguel Paschal Garcia - a prison and marriage record in Dunedin (1867/68), but no death record I could find in NZ nor Aust, nor birth record yet (1835/36 Shadwell, London).  His mother Elizabeth Garcia - census records, but no birth yet (abt 1803 Gibraltar) nor marriage, nor death record.
This is the furthest we've got and am holding on to hope that the birth certificate of Charles Miguel Garcia will show Miguel (Senior) and Elizabeth.  That would be a huge breakthrough thanks to you and others.

I'm hoping it's the breakthrough we've been needing - and just in time for the Garcia family reunion in NZ in January.  I've ordered the certificate online as Charles Mignet (Miguel) Garcia, so hopefully that will get me the certificate even if it is Carlos.  On the death certificate it is definitely Charles.  But these names are often so difficult to read.  The informant on the death certificate is Maria Mogues, I think, which could be Marquez or any other variant.  I'm hopeful the birth certificate shows Elizabeth as the mother.  Who knows, Maria Mogues may have been a sister or some other relative.  RootsChat is certainly helping me get results I would not have got otherwise - not for years anyway  :)

Thanks for the help.  I'll follow that up for sure.  It's definitely worth the money when you start chipping away at those brickwalls.  It's the time in between that is frustrating.  I've been watching the letterbox here in New Zealand every day for a few weeks for the last certificate to arrive, but it is so worth it to chip away at those years back in London.  I'll be a much more interested tourist when I next visit, knowing about our London connections. Cheers

I'm still trying to find more about Miguel Paschal Garcia and his family in London from 1835 or earlier until about 1865.  His mother appears to be Elizabeth born in Gibraltar 1803.
Received yesterday a death certificate of a Charles Miguel Garcia d. 1845 Tottenham Court Road, a baby.  No mention of Elizabeth as informant but the certificate refers to the baby as being son of Miguel Garcia, a lieutenant in the Spanish army.  When my g-grandfather Miguel Paschal Garcia got married in Dunedin in 1868 his wedding notice in Otago Daily Times referred to him as son of the late Lieutenant-Colonel of the Spanish Light Infantry - so assuming an increase in rank, I may have found a baby brother of Miguel P Garcia and the name of my g-g-g, namely also Miguel Garcia.
Is anyone able to help me find:
- the birth details of Miguel P Garcia in 1835 Shadwell (have tried parishregisters.com)
- the maiden name of Elizabeth Garcia
- details of Miguel Garcia (Senior)
- are there likely to be details of the burial, inscriptions of the baby Charles Miguel Garcia that might further my search and help establish connections?
Many thanks for any suggestions and encouragement.
