I have a new Ancestry DNA match, I'll assign initials for ease of understanding/following...

F = 1st–2nd Cousin - 406 cM - 6% shared across 20 segments

F has 6 people in their tree - 5 living, 1 deceased, would be a g/mother who was known to me...
However, the tree has the g/mother with her marital surname rather than her maiden surname!

R = 1st–2nd Cousin - 578 cM - 8% shared across 21 segments

R has 6 people in their tree - all living.

I know R is a g/child of the above g/mother.

My question...is it likely going by DNA figures F & R are siblings or might they be 1st cousins?

From my paper trail & 1st hand knowledge (having contact with this family) - R comes up in my FTM as my 2C1R.

My g/m & R's g g/m were siblings.

The Common Room / Cousins German
« on: Sunday 05 February 23 07:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have a marriage between 'Cousins German'...

I know 'Brothers German' share the same parents, however...

Do Cousins German share Paternal G/parents, Maternal G/parents or a mixture?

In other words, can the parents be Brothers, Sisters or Brother & Sister?

Scotland / SP (Scotlandspeople) - 'Wildcards allowed' DEFAULT reinstated!!!
« on: Tuesday 31 January 23 03:03 GMT (UK)  »
What an unexpected surprise & such a delight again...

I thought I'd let you all know, you no longer have to go through the rigmarole of having to choose the 'Wildcards allowed' option when inserting asterisks as the default of wildcards has been reinstated!!!

What a difference it makes to searches with names with many variants, no longer a trudge, so much quicker.

The Common Room / Offer for Newspapers dot com - Is It Worth It?
« on: Tuesday 10 January 23 02:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I've never had a sub for newspapers.com in the past but I've had an email with an offer of £49.99 for 6 months & I'm wondering if it's a good offer?

It seems a good offer, should I take it or has there been better offers?

The Common Room / Adding 'Researched' Trees To Ancestry With 'Unknown' DNA Connections?
« on: Saturday 01 October 22 01:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

This may be a bit complicated but here goes...

I have many 'researched' trees on my laptop which I'd like to add to Ancestry eventually.

Many of those trees are 'hobby trees' connected to the area of my research which I've created when helping others over many years often using info. I've collated from my own research.

I've recently found a DNA match to a specific line which I've 'researched' although ongoing, i.e. a mountain of info. on my matches' family with no idea how we connect...

If I add the 'researched' tree to Ancestry, I won't be the 'main' person as I am not 'related' as such as I don't know the connection i.e. how do I add the tree without it throwing my match off or will it not really make a difference as it will be obvious who the gg/parents are & their lines further back?

I have read on RC about trees with the owner not being 'related' having an affect on working out connections.

Any advice is welcome as I don't want to be confusing people but just as important, I'd like to be able to use the tree to find my own connection with my match.

Scotland / Death (Scotland) of Ellen/Helen McHendry or MacPhee b c1879 Ireland
« on: Saturday 24 September 22 03:41 BST (UK)  »
I'd really appreciate any help in locating a death reg. for...

Ellen/Helen McHendry/MacPhee (or variants)

Here's what I know...

1912 - Ellen McHendry 33yrs married Neil MacPhee 51yrs in Cathcart, Renfrew

Parents - John McHendry (Farmer, Deceased) & Ellen McHendry (MS Palmer, Deceased)

1912 - Ellen was at Castle Farm, Newton Mearns (Renfrew) & House Keeper (Marriage)

1911 - Helen McHendry was at Castle Farm, Newton Mearns & House Keeper (Census)

I haven't searched further back as this relates to finding her death only!

I believe they had at least 4 children born between 1912 & 1919 (from death indexes), 1 I have the BC for, born 1915 Lanark & died 1997 in Benbecula, Inverness, Scotland.

1951 - Death of husband Neil, Widower of Ellen McHendry in Howmore, South Uist, Inverness, Scotland

I have failed to find the death of Ellen/Helen between 1919 & 1951 using all variants/wildcards I can think of & leaving mms out i.e. I'm hoping someone can come up with something I've missed.

I haven't got any info. on marriages of children to know if Ellen/Helen was alive/deceased as they'd be too late for downloadable certs.

I know the child 1915 - 1977 was never married.

Can anyone tell me the exact date of the 1945 Newfoundland & Labrador census please?

Add...I've added a new query on the Marriage Notice below at Reply #7 rather than begin a new thread.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What is the Maiden Surname?
« on: Wednesday 25 May 22 23:11 BST (UK)  »
I've deliberately omitted date, place etc. & not added any surrounding text to see what others think 1st.

This seems very clear (to me) but is indexed as something quite different.
