Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / What was happening in Guernsey in 1861?
« on: Wednesday 25 March 15 04:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Some of my husband's ancestors were in Guernsey on the 1861 census. I wondered if anyone might know of a reason why a Mason would be living there with his wife, but not his children, at that time. Was there a huge building project happening at that time? This is the family:
1861 Census

Henry Dell born abt 1821  England Head  St Peter Port  Guernsey
Mary Ann Dell born abt 1815  England Wife  St Peter Port  Guernsey   (nee DRURY)
Mary Ann Linden born abt 1843  England Niece  St Peter Port  Guernsey (bap.Jun qtr 1845 St.Giles)

Does anyone know of a way to find out when they travelled from the mainland, please?

Any help appreciated,
OzzieJoan

Other Countries / India, Cawnpore. Birth Joseph THOMAS around 1823
« on: Sunday 07 December 14 05:08 GMT (UK)  »
I've done the right thing and searched all the posts on here. Also each link given in the Resources for India posting. And still I can't find this man.

In censuses in England 1861-1881 incl. he states born either E.Indies, Cawnpore or India, Cawnpore and puts his age consistent with a birth of 1823. I thought I had him in 1891 but can't find it at the minute. However, in 1901 he states (surprisingly) that he was born Clifton, Bristol.

Any help sorting him out would be appreciated.

Australia / WWII Military Record help
« on: Wednesday 27 November 13 05:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone please help one of my neighbours who doesn't have internet. She is looking for the WWII service record of a relation.

He is Charles Henry BOESHART b.1919 somewhere round the mid-Queensland area. Died in Darwen in 2011.

He isn't as straight forward as he should be. His mother was Agnes
Minnie NEUBAUER and she gave birth to him before she was married. Her
sister Matilda BOESHART brought him up as her own so his surname could be
either.

Anyway, he was in WWII (she didn't say which service) and it's that
record she's after. If you can help you can send it to me and I will
pass it on.

Many thanks,
OzzieJoan

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Donhead St.Mary - BROCKWAY, Thomas marriage
« on: Monday 16 September 13 07:08 BST (UK)  »
Thomas BROCKWAY b.ca.1810 presumably married and had 3 children all Donhead St.Mary:
William 1835; Fanny 1836; and, Maria 1837.

I have no idea who their mother was. The family moved to Wales sometime between the birth of Maria, and 1841 as they are in Trevethin, Mon on the 1841 census. Thomas, died in Abersychan, Mon.

Thanks for this information if it exists.

Hello everyone, how is summer in England this year? Warm I hope.

I wonder if anyone would be able to tell me the names and DOB for any children of the above couple, please.

Otherwise, does anyone have a set of parents for Charles HOWSE (v.) born around 1810. Census states birthplace Oxford but no certainty.

Many thanks,
OzzieJoan

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Sheffield BMD before 1837
« on: Wednesday 15 May 13 06:28 BST (UK)  »
Please I need help with a really sticky and complicated one. I'll be as brief as possible to make it easier.

Sarah (possibly MARSDEN) b.ca.1795 married a BERRY, date unsure but presumably before the birth of Joseph in 1819. He must have died after 1826.

In 1841 Sarah is with William LEE (45) and their daughters Sarah 7 and Martha 5, as well as Joseph Berry (Burry) born 1819  William Berry (ditto) born 1826 all Sheffield except William although we know Sarah was born Birmingham.

In 1851 Sarah is widow and has children Joseph Berry 32 and Sarah 17 and Martha 15 Marsden with her.

In 1861 Sarah, still widow,  is living with her married daughter Martha.
I think her death is the one registered Sheffield Mar 1871 9c/258 age 76.

I have searched parish records that are available on Ancestry.com, Sheffield Indexers and FamilySearch but have been unable to find births for the two daughters either with the name BERRY, LEE or MARSDEN in Sheffield which is where they state they were born in each census.

Sarah snr. was born in Birmingham according to each census and her age has remained constant at a birth date of 1795. I can't be sure that MARSDEN was her surname.

I found a marriage in Sheffield of Sarah MARSDEN to Edward BERRY on 9 May 1812 but have no way of knowing if that was her real maiden name, or if she was some other Sarah.

If her daughter Sarah b.1834 is a LEE as shown in 1841 then Sarah snr. must have married William LEE somewhere between the death of her BERRY husband, unknown, and 1834.

On FreeBMD there are 8 deaths of William LEE between 1842 and 1850 in Sheffield.

As Sarah is once again a widow in 1851 and called MARSDEN as are her younger children, I wondered whether she might have taken yet another shot at marriage. There is a possible marriage on FreeBMD in June 1844 of Sarah LEE to one of 4 which includes a George MARSDEN but it took place in Huddersfield, which is a new place in the equation.

As I said, it's a muddle but if anyone can throw light on any of it I would be very grateful.

Should I post to the Warwickshire Look-ups for the birth of Sarah Marsden in 1795 in Birmingham?

I have details of Joseph and William BERRY so need no help on those, thanks.

I had hoped to find that Clara Dean MORTIMER would have been buried at Holme on Spalding Moor, the same as her father. However, I have been told that there are no other MORTIMERs buried there other than James.

Clara Dean Mortimer's death is registered as Q1 1862 Howden 9d/51. Is there another cemetery where she might have been buried. In both 1861 and 1871 they are living at Station Street, Holme on Spalding Moor.
