Angus (Forfarshire) / Alexander Dunn, Montrose
« on: Sunday 22 November 09 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having a few problems with my GG-Grandfather, Alexander Dunn of Montrose.

Here's what I've got so far -

He was a hairdresser, and married Jane Baird on 2nd February 1845.
I have them in the 1851 census living at Castle St in Montrose, along with their son, Alexander and daughter Susan.
They are still at Castle St in the 1861 census, but now they have more children - Alexander, Susan, Jane (my G-Grandmother),Eliza, Georgina, Jessie and Mary.

When daughter Jane marries my G-Grandfather, John Stronner in 1874, her usual address is still given as Castle St, Montrose, and her parents are noted as Alexander Dunn, Painter (!), deceased, and Jane Dunn, MS Baird.

I cant for the life of me find the death of Alexander Dunn, though I have found one for Jane Dunn (Baird) in 1876. Nor can I find any trace of the family in the 1871 census.

I've also looked in the OPR for any sign of the birth of Alexander Dunn and Jane Baird but with no luck.

Any help with this family much appreciated

Jim

The attached file is part of the marriage certificate of my great-grandparents, John Stronner and Jane Dunn. They were married in Montrose, Angus, Scotland on 31st Dec 1873.

I'm trying to make out -
1. John's addresss. It looks like (?) street (?)
2. John's fathers occupation. Looks like Engine attendant at (?) mill
3. Jane's occupation. Looks like (?) (?) maker - or is it worker.
4. Jane's father's occupation. Looks like Painter (?) (?)

Any help much appreciated.

Does anyone have the MI for my Grandparents -
James Irvine, Died 26 June 1934, and his wife Susan Jane Stronner (possibly only one "n"), Died 28 Oct 1959.

There were also 2 children who died in infancy, and I think they were both boys. I don't know the names - John possibly for one, but I don't know the other.

Any information much appreciated.

Aberdeenshire / Help reading death entry
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 10:34 GMT (UK)  »
The attached is part of the death entry for Alexander Leith, who died on 10 Feb 1868 in Charleston, Nigg.

It looks to me as if his parents are -
John Leith  Barber
Fraser Leith, ms Park

Fraser seems a rather unusual name for a female.

What do you folks think?

Not sure if this is the right place, but here goes . . .

My Wife's GGG Grandfather, Alexander Leith is shown in the 1851 census for Banchory Devenick, Scotland, as being 54, & a pensioner of the H E I C, receiving 6d per day.

I'm wondering what he did to recieve such a pension.  I've found some records of BMD in India on the British Library website, but I was wondering if there is any records of service, or something like that, to show why he got a pension.

It's also strange that I can't find him on the 1841 census, but his wife is shown as a Pensioner's wife.  Alexander would only have been about 44 at this time, so it seems strange that he was a pensioner.

Could it be possible that he was away, possibly on a EIC ship, and his wife got a "Pension" to live on as part of his wages?

Just a thought.

Any help much appreciated

Angus (Forfarshire) / IRVINE, William, Robert and Andrew
« on: Friday 25 January 08 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
I've got a copy of the birth registration of my G-Grandmother, Helen Carnegy Irvine on 8 June 1855 where it states her Father is William Irvine, born in Menmuir, a forester and 47 years of age.

That means he was born about 1808, and I've found a christening record on IGI for a William Irvine on 8 May 1808 also in Menmuir. His father is given as Robert Irvine.

There is a christening record on IGI for a Robert Irvine on 21 Sep 1762 in Menmuir where his father is given as Andrew Irvine

Do you think I've got the right people?
The IGI does not appear to give wives/mothers, so what's the chances of finding out?

Any help/advice much appreciated.

Cheers

Not sure where the correct place to post this would be, but here goes -

The attached is from my Great Grandmothers death registration on Scotlands people.  Could someone please tell me what it reads, and more important, what it means !

She died in Stonehaven, Scotland in 1903 age 62.

Donegal / Thomas Dorian - Elizabeth Campell
« on: Sunday 13 January 08 13:55 GMT (UK)  »
This is a bit of a long shot -

My gg-grandfather was a Thomas Dorian, born in Ireland about 1813.
His wife was Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of John Campbell and Ann ?. she was born about 1817.

Thomas and Elizabeth were married about 1829, and had 5 children - Agnes Ann (my g-grandmother), John, Charles, Thomas and Mary.

Agnes Ann was born in Ireland about 1840
John was born in Ireland about 1843
Charles was born in Letterkenny, Ireland on 13 Feb 1846
Thomas was born in Stonehaven, Scotland in 1851
Mary was born in Stonehaven, Scotland in 1853

I'm assuming that Thomas must have died between 1853 & 1855 in Scotland as there is no record of his death that I can find on Scotlandspeople.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to find out any more information on Thomas, Elizabeth and their parents in Ireland.

I also wonder if it would be possible to find out when and how the arrived in Aberdeen and Stonehaven, Scotland.

Cheers
Jim
