Ciderdrinker- you have been very busy. I didnt realise Ellen died in Worcester. Thanks also for the info about the John from Wolverhampton as I did wonder about him. Now I can rule that family out. Im becoming more convinced that Ellen and her boys could be my ancestors. So yes, thats my next step. Youve been a great help thankyou.

Well when I first started my research I thought the Alfred Hope of Moor st Worcester was my grandfather. It was only when I got my grandparent's marriage certificate that I realised his father was John.  So I had been researching the wrong family  ???
I must admit I came to the same conclusion that my grandfather was the Alfred of Ledbury and John Simmonds was his father. I know that Ellen went onto marry her lodger John and another clue was that that Alfred's brother was called Harry. I noticed that my dad's brother was called Alfred H Hope. I asked my sister today if she remembers dad saying his father was from Worcester and she agrees but there doesnt seem to be any evidence to prove this.
By the way I spent alot of time with my great aunt Mary Elisabeth who married in London and my auntie Elsie ( who was half sister to my grandmother Ethel) but not sure if she married. I only wish they were alive today as they probably know where Alfred came from. My own father died some years ago now.

Hi Thanks for your replies.
John was a general labourer and was deceased on the 1914 marriage certificate. I couldnt find a war record for Alfred Hope that related back to Worcester. Its so frustrating as I cant research his family. I have a very old photo of him in his uniform.

For a long time I have been trying to research my grandfather Alfred Hope born 1893/4.  I know from his marriage certificate that he was 20 in 1914 and his father was called John. I have a vague memory of my dad telling me that Alfred came from Worcester. Alfred married in Hereford  and after the war returned to his wife Ethel in Bosbury but he suffered shell shock and sometime in the 1920s he disappeared ( possibly back to Worcester?).
My own dad was orphaned after his mum died and so spent most of his childhood in a home in Hastings. After the 2nd world war he lodged with an aunt who lived in one of the houses at the top of Lark Hill rd. Could this aunt be a relative of my grandfathers? Its so frustrating not knowing her name. The only other info I have is that he was a driver/ groom in the Royal Army Service Corps and later worked as a painter and decorator.
I havent found any records at all apart from marriage. So desperate to find out about him.

Herefordshire / Re: Orphanage/childrens home Ledbury

Thank you for taking the time to reply.
When I was in Ledbury a couple of months ago I was talking to a lady at the museum. She told me about the home at Eastnor. It's quite possible that dad was at this home. I'm not sure whether Eastnor still comes under Herefordshire or Worcestershire and if the records office would hold records for the home.
Thanks once again,

Many thanks for your reply. It is such a shame that the records are no longer in existence but it must have been very interesting looking around the house. Knowing that your grandad and your great uncle spent their childhood there and probably played in the grounds.
Although I have heard of Eardisley, I'm not sure how far from Ledbury it is situated.
I will have to have a look on the map.
Dad passed away some years ago and since starting my research there are so many questions I wished I had asked him now. I can just remember him saying that after his mum passed away, he went to live with his aunt but she couldnt cope with him and so she put him in a home in Ledbury. Obviously the orphanage was somewhere else within a reasonable distance of Ledbury.
once again thanks for your help,

It's possible that he was sent there as there doesnt look like there was a home in Ledbury. I really wish I had found out more from him before he passed away.
Many thanks

Lol well I knew there was some illigitimacy in the family but my paternal ancestors seem to of made quite a habit of it  :D.  Whilst researching my paternal grandfather I have come to the conclusion that he might have also been illigitimate too!
Thank you for this information as it has given me lots to think about.
