Herefordshire / Orphanage/childrens home Ledbury
« on: Wednesday 16 January 13 20:41 GMT (UK)  »
My father was born in Bosbury in 1924 and unfortunately by tha age of six he had lost both his parents. I know that his aunt took him in for a while but eventually he went into a childrens home in Ledbury. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the home e.g where it was in Ledbury.
He was only there for a short time before being sent up North to a home and then eventually spending the remainder of his childhood on the south coast.

I was wondering if anyone can find Maria Cotterell on the 1841 or 1851 censuses.
She was born in Ledbury c 1837 and I would like to find out the names of her parents and siblings. She was my gt gt grandmother on my father's side.
Many thanks

Thank you all for your help.
The Alfred in Wolverhampton fits the bill with the names and yet my gut instinct says that it is the Ledbury Alfred. There must have been some reason why Alfred was in the Herefordshire area when he met my grandmother who was in service in Hereford at the time. Another thing was that a relative once told me there was some kind of mystery or secret within the Hope family history.  I know from freebmd that John and Ellen eventually married.  Also my dad's brother was called Alfred H Hope  ( could they have named him after Harry ). Think my detective brain is in auto drive.  I just wish I could find some solid proof of this.
Thanks once again

England / Alfred Hope HELP PLEASE
« on: Saturday 15 December 12 23:59 GMT (UK)  »
For a long while now, Ive been desperately researching my paternal grandfather Alfred Hope, but there are blocks at every turn.  I could really do with some help from a kind fellow family historian.
Information so far: Born c. 1894 possibly Worcester,  married Ethel Soley in Hereford 1914/5, father John Hope.  According to marriage cert he was a driver in the Royal army service corps based at Aldershot. I have checked war records online but there is no sign of him.  Like so many soldiers, he was gassed and suffered shell shock. As far as I know he disappeared from the family home. My father was born in 1924 and so it was sometime after that. He lived in Bosbury near Ledbury Herefordshire on his return from the war.
I have found a birth for an Alfred Hope in Worcester around the right time but the father is an Alfred not a John.  There is an Alfred born to a Ellen Hope in Ledbury again around the right time. Apparently she married her lodger John Simmonds ( not Hope but not impossible I know).
All I need is that one clue that puts me on the right road.
Would ordering my dad's birth certificate give me anything more?
I would be so grateful for some help   :)

Thank you so much for the information given.  I appologise  re: 1911 census as I didnt realise there were restrictions.
I wonder if Catherine was visiting relations in Worcester when she died or whether they had moved back down by then.
I'm not sure where exactly in the district of Bury that Annie was born.
Her marriage to her husband William Oneill is registered as Charlton

I would love to find out where my maternal grandmother lived in 1911.  I can remember my late mum telling me that my grandmother was in service at one point. I would really like to find out who she worked for and would be grateful for any help. She also told me my grandfather called her 'Annie from the cake shop' and so she must have worked there too before marriage.

Her name was Annie Elizabeth Rogers, born in Bury C 1896 ( parents were Samuel and Catherine Rogers).
