This marriage explains why Alice did not marry John Mason. He was her brother-in-law and before the Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act of 1907, it was illegal for them to marry. However this does not explain why she and John W. Gookey did not marry until 1915. John Mason Snr seems to have disappeared  ( inmate in asylum according to Eva's marriage cert. 1902) and Alice had started a relationship with John Gookey by 1902 when Percy Gookey was conceived.  Still a puzzle there. ???

Devon / Re: Northam - missing burial of John GALWAY

Hi Diana,
Could John Galway have been a naval man or fisherman ? If so, he might have drowned and his body never recovered, so no burial. Just an idea.

The Common Room / Re: GENEALOGY LINK

If you are correct in your assumption that the two Abrahams were first cousins, then they shared a grandfather and this person would be your 4xgreat grandfather and also the 4xgreat grandfather of Mark's mother, Patricia Mills. You and Patricia Mills are 5th cousins and her son, Mark would be your 5th cousin once removed. Mark would be 6th cousin to your children.

Hope this has not confused you too much. As others have suggested you could use a family tree program to work this out. Of course, you must prove that the two Abrahams were indeed first cousins and shared a Harris grandfather.

Somerset / Re: James Wines of Stratton 1851 census
« on: Tuesday 14 May 13 21:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have just looked at the 1851 Census image on FindMyPast. James Wines is living alone, but recorded as married. People in the next house are two sisters with the name Harris. There is probably a mistake in the Ancestry transcription, combining two households.

The Lighter Side / Re: Any Ideas on this name?

Another idea. A rather uncommon name that occurs in Bedfordshire is Barfoot/Barefoot. Could Barcock  be a variant or have developed from the same root?

Canada / Re: Canadian research Help

Hi Becky,

I don't think you should worry about the Nova Scotia "marriage". It was most likely caused by Ancestry's handy pull-down list of place names that appears when you start typing in a place name. If you are using ancestry.com or .ca, it always suggests places in the US or Canada before those in the UK. The tree owner probably did not notice that she had chosen Halifax N.S as marriage place instead of Halifax, Yorkshire (same thing happened with Edith's birth place).  The only wife listed for Arthur is the correct one, Edith Annie Alcock. The tree owner makes no claim that Arthur entered into a second "marriage" during his brief time in Canada.

It is annoying that you have not received a reply to your message, as it looks like the tree owner has many family photos and perhaps info to share. I suppose you noticed that she is a great granddaughter of Alfred Mothersole (1859-1940) who emigrated to Canada in 1906 (brother of Kate).
It is possible that your message was not sent to the tree owner. When you login to Ancestry, check "Messages" - "sent messages" to make sure. I sent a message last week and when I received no reply, checked, found that there was no record of it, even though I had done everything properly and the "message sent" box appeared after I clicked "send". I had to send a new message (which did get through).
