Canada / Journey from Canada to England late 1930s COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 06 November 12 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find details of my mother's trip from Vancouver (where she lived) to England around 1936/7.

Her name was Isobel Hendry MacMillan and I believe she was travelling alone.   I have a feeling that the ship went thru the Panama canal, so she may have sailed from Seattle or Los Angeles, where a school friend lived.    She left Vancouver by train, but that could equally suggest sailing from the east coast.

I have a copy of the death record for Robert McMillan (my 2xg grandfather) stating that he died 19.06.1882 one month and 14 days after an accident.   He lived in Partick and was a sawyer by trade.

Is there any chance of finding out what kind of accident he was involved in ???

Occupation Interests / Information about Guy Motors,Wolverhampton, 1940's-1960
« on: Friday 03 February 12 12:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching some family history regarding my husband's grandfather Col. Arthur Jerrett.   He was MD of Guy Motors of Fallings Park, Wolverhampton in the late 1940's until his retirement in 1958.

Does anyone have any information, photographs, documents etc from this period concerning Guy Motors and Col. Arthur Jerrett?

I know that the company caused a stir at a Commercial Motor Show in the 1950's with a stack of lorries/chassis.   Does anyone have a photo of the stand at that show?

Any help or information would be appreciated.

Antrim / Belfast address for Robert McMillan and Jane McMillan (nee Hamilton)
« on: Tuesday 10 January 12 16:00 GMT (UK)  »
This is a long shot, but I have drawn a complete blank trying to trace the parents/siblings etc of Robert McMillan b1818 in Belfast, and wondered if finding an address in the Belfast area might help ???

Robert married Jane Hamilton (b 1819) in 1839 in Belfast.   They had a daughter Martha b 1839 in Belfast.   I have been unable to find any marriage certificate for Robert and Jane, or a birth certificate for Martha.   By 1841 they had emigrated to Govan, Glasgow, Scotland.   On the Scottish censuses Robert is listed as a Sawyer/Journeyman.

Can anyone help Please ???

World War One / Is this a Scottish Uniform?
« on: Wednesday 05 October 11 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Please can someone tell me what sort of uniform this is, and roughly the date.

The photo states it was taken in Partick, Glasgow.   I have no idea who this is but I do have family that lived there.   Any idea of his age?

The mark on the left wrist is a scratch on the photo, not a watch.

Thanks,

Joan

Canada / Help to trace William J M Forrest emigrated to Canada 1924
« on: Monday 09 May 11 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Please can someone help me to trace William Jaffrey Middleton Forrest.

He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland 20.11.1897 to parents Alexander Forrest and Mary Chalmers.   He married Annie Chalmers in Aberdeen 30.09.1921.

William and Annie left Glasgow 18.04.1924 aboard the CP ship Metagama, destination port Quebec, bound for Montreal.

Apart from knowing that William died somewhere in Canada in 1978, I know nothing else about them - where they lived, any children they may have had etc.   There were Forrest cousins in Vancouver, so it is possible that they ended up there.

Canada Lookup Request / Isabella Wilson Forrest b31.08.1871 Old Machar, Aberdeen.
« on: Monday 11 April 11 19:03 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Isabella Wilson Forrest.   A Miss Forrest departed from Glasgow, Scotland on 15th August 1914 on the Athenia bound for Montreal.   Can anyone find her arrival in Montreal and final destination for me please?   The departure details give no first name.

I am hoping that this is Isabella and that her destination was either somewhere in Alberta or Vancouver.

I can find no record of her after the 1911 Scottish Census, or of her death in Scotland and am wondering if she died visiting relatives in Canada ???

(I have a thread on the Lanarkshire, Scotland sight).

Lanarkshire / Isabella Wilson Forrest b31.08.1871 Old Machar, Aberdeen.
« on: Friday 01 April 11 19:09 BST (UK)  »
Please can someone help me to trace Isabella Wilson Forrest (Bella) b31.08.1871 in Old Machar, Aberdeen.   She was the daughter of James S Forrest and Isabella Hendry.

The family moved to Glasgow (Govan/Partick) between Isabella's birth and the birth of her sister Mary Ann in 1873.   I believe that she married William Paterson 27.04.1893 in Lanark, after which I can find no trace of her.   I think she died fairly young, but don't know when, where, or whether she had any children ???
